Calling all Duranies! In this week’s edition of What’s Going On, we’re looking at the long-awaited 15th studio album from Duran Duran and their fabulous new music video. We’ve also got the latest from Danko, Agnes, WILLOW with Avril Lavigne, and the return of Martha and the Muffins. As always, if you dig what you’re hearing, be sure to stream and follow these artists.
Duran Duran – Global superstars Duran Duran have dropped their highly anticipated 15th album Future Past. This time, the guys worked with producer Erol Alkan on the bulk of the album and also had disco pioneer Giorgio Moroder handle production on two tracks. Mark Ronson, Mike Garson, Tove Lo, CHAI, Graham Coxon and rising rapper Ivorian Doll round out the list of collaborators. The album feels familiar while also still being innovative and experimental, very much living up to the Future Past title. Earlier this week, the band dropped the Alison Jackson-directed music video for the standout single “Anniversary.” The groundbreaking music video sees Duran Duran cavorting with a cavalcade of celebrity impersonators, including lookalikes of the band.

WILLOW & Avril Lavigne – One of the coolest aspects of the recent pop-punk resurgence is seeing just how many talented young people of colour are leading the charge. WILLOW is one of the frontrunners of the current pop-punk movement and she just dropped the music video for her song “G R O W” with Canada’s very own Avril Lavigne, as well as Travis Barker. The infectious and economic banger conjures the glory days of acts like Paramore, Fall Out Boy, and Yellowcard. After experimenting with a variety of different genres and styles throughout her career, it definitely feels like the Warped Tour sound is where WILLOW feels at home and truly shines the most.

Martha and the Muffins – They’ve worked with Daniel Lanois, they’ve won Juno Awards and now, Martha and the Muffins are back with the announcement of Marthology: In and Outtakes, due out on November 5. Marthology: In And Outtakes acts both as a retrospective of a career that gave us new wave classics like “Echo Beach”, “Paint by Number Heart” and “Black Stations/White Stations” and as a collection of hidden gems, B-sides and alternate versions. The first taste of what to expect from this project is the new single “Do You Ever Wonder”, which originally was made available as part of the indie-rock compilation the world according to popguru back in 1999.

Agnes – Disco isn’t dead and Agnes is here to prove it with Magic Still Exists, her brand new album. There has been a glut of major pop records that mine the elements of disco, but Magic Still Exists stands out ahead of the pack. Not only does Agnes sound in top form, but the lyrics also will stick with you as she explores spirituality and resilience. It’s been nearly a decade between albums for the Swedish pop sensation, but she hasn’t lost a beat. Speaking on the new album, Agnes says: “Mixing spiritual lyrics with disco felt both tempting and necessary. Disco is freedom, to express oneself and not be ashamed. But the music was also something I needed to do to grow spiritually and strengthen myself. It was an opportunity to take what I have within me, multiply it and just play with it.”

Danko – Memphis-soaked Americana on acid by way of Falkirk, Scotland, that’s what you can expect from Danko. The Scottish four-piece is out now with their new single “Rattlesnake”, which can only be described as a rollicking good time. While you can hear the influence of bands such as My Morning Jacket and The War On Drugs, Danko truly has a sound that’s all their own. Explaining what they were going for on “Rattlesnake”, Danko’s singer/guitarist says: “With ‘Rattlesnake’ we were trying to capture the old school, feel good, rock n roll sound we all love. That feeling of leaving work on a Friday and being free!” I think it’s safe to say that they nailed it.
