This week’s edition of What’s Going On features the latest from Christine and the Queens, Sarah Jaffe, Skip Marley, and Blue Lab Beats, and a hot new collaboration courtesy of Kali Uchis & SZA. As always, if you dig what you’re hearing, be sure to stream and follow these artists.
Kali Uchis & SZA – There seems to be a plethora of star-studded musical collaborations coming out at the moment. We’ve covered two recent Elton John duets on here that saw him working with both Dua Lipa and Chalie Puth. And now we’ve got another fun collab, this time a cross-genre affair from Kali Uchis and SZA. “fue mejor” originally had a feature from Canadian superstar PARTYNEXTDOOR on it, but he’s been replaced by SZA, making her Spanish debut. The vibey cut gets elevated to the next level with its sultry Daniel Sannwald-directed music video. Describing the vibe of “fue mejor”, Kali Uchis explains: “This is Latin R&B, this is SZA singing in Spanish for the very first time, this is spooky season, this IS the moment.” She’s not wrong!

Sarah Jaffe – Producer and singer-songwriter Sarah Jaffe dropped her new The Championship EP and with that comes the two new singles – “Championship” and “Frances McDormand, Catherine O’Hara.” The stellar new tracks see Jaffe working again with her longtime collaborators Aaron Kelley and Roberto Sanchez. “Championship” stands out in particular with its basketball references and lyrics that equate sex to a sports victory. Speaking on the recording process, Sarah Jaffe says: “Once these songs were tracked Rob and I hopped in the studio with magic producer Aaron Kelley. I loved these two songs beforehand. But once they left Aaron’s studio I was obsessed. He just adds so much life to everything he works on. It was so rewarding to see these songs through with Rob and Aaron. We are a dream team.”

Skip Marley – Two-time Grammy nominee Skip Marley wants you to feel the “Vibe” with his new single. Featuring reggae artist Popcaan, “Vibe” is produced by Rykeyz, who also produced Marley’s huge hit “Slow Down” with H.E.R. The promising young member of the famed Marley clan is working hard in the studio on new music and if “Vibe” is anything to go by, his next project is sure to give us all the fun, sun-soaked tunes that fans have come to love from Skip. Speaking on the feeling of the new single, Skip Marley says: “Vibe is a feeling, a whole spirit and energy. A movement that brings light and life. It’s about being alive!”

Christine and the Queens – French phenomenon Christine and the Queens has dropped Joseph, a surprise 2-track EP. Joseph consists of a pair of covers: Michel Fugain & Le Big Bazar’s “Comme l’oiseau” and George Michael’s “Freedom.” Covering George Michael is already a lofty task, especially when it’s a song like “Freedom” that was such a huge pop culture moment. While it keeps the same triumphant energy as the original, it’s anything but a retread. If you watched the recent Global Citizen Live event, there’s a good chance you saw Christine and the Queens perform the new covers on Joseph as well as re-worked arrangements of past hits. All proceeds from the new EP will go towards Global Citizen.

Blue Lab Beats – Are you into jazztronica? If you’re not, London-based duo Blue Lab Beats is going to change that with their new single “Dat It” featuring Kiefer. Jazz with an injection of modern electronic energy is what the duo consisting of NK-OK and Mr DM is all about. “Dat It” is a testament to how well those styles blend. The feel-good vibe will make you long for the summer heat. Speaking on how the collaboration with Kiefer came to be, the guys from Blue Lab Beats say: “This song was so much fun to record, especially having the amazing Kiefer featuring on keys. We did a mini-tour with Kiefer way back in 2019 and have been in contact since so we finally decided to make a track this year.”
