This week’s instalment of What’s Going On features the latest releases from global sensation Maluma, Darin, Blak Emoji and Kadence. We’ve also got the latest single from indie singer-songwriter Angel Olson that seems to have listeners on social media divided. As always, if you dig what you’re hearing, be sure to stream and follow these artists.
Maluma – Colombian heartthrob Maluma is looking to steam things up with “Sobrio”, his hot new single. Sure to be a Latin pop smash, “Sobrio” sees Maluma switching things up from the cocky playboy vibes fans loved on last year’s “Hawái” and going for a more subdued and vulnerable approach. It also serves as the lead single and first taste of what’s to come from his forthcoming new album. The music video is a star-studded affair that speaks to his global reach, featuring appearances from Scott Disick, Saweetie, Shanina Shaik and Quincy Brown.

Angel Olsen – Indie darling Angel Olsen has announced her new ‘80s covers EP Aisles and dropped the first single, a cover of Laura Branigan’s “Gloria.” Let’s go ahead and put it on the table. Yes, Angel Olsen’s take on “Gloria” sucks all of the frenetic retro fun out of the tune but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The hyperactive cautionary tale about a young girl moving too fast is transformed into a slowed-down synth-heavy lament. Speaking on her motivation behind tackling these 80s classics, Olson says: “I just wanted to have a little fun and be a little more spontaneous, and I think I needed to remember that I could!”

Kadence – Singer-songwriter Kadence James is quickly carving out a lane for himself in the pop music world and his latest release “You’ve Changed the Way I Feel” is sure to keep the momentum going. The former local New York City boyband member sounds right at home on the sultry dance track. With its instrumentation and Kadence’s warm vocals, “You’ve Changed the Way I Feel” isn’t a hands in the air four-on-the-floor banger, rather a mature jam that blends jazz, soul and pop together in a way that’s guaranteed to make you want to move. I can’t wait to see what Kadence does next.

Blak Emoji – NYC band Blak Emoji have a sound that’s all their own. The outfit that’s the brainchild of singer and multi-instrumentalist Kelsey Warren seamlessly combines elements of electro, pop and R&B on their new single “Swooning On You.” The romantic tune is an instant earworm. On how “Swooning On You” came to be, frontman Kelsey Warren says: “The lyrics were inspired by a recent conversation, and once the lyrical lightbulb turned on, the melody came out of nowhere. The song describes a ‘love at first connection’ vibe. That feeling you have when you relate to a person instantly without explanation.”

Darin – From acts like ABBA, Ace of Base, Robyn, and Roxette to super producers like Max Martin and the late Denniz Pop, the Swedes just have a way with pop music. Carrying the mantle of Swedish pop royalty now is Darin. Sweden’s current reigning King of Pop has dropped his latest single “Can’t Stay Away”, a sugary-sweet piece of disco confection. Describing the fun music video for “Can’t Stay Away”, Darin says: “This video is colourful, chic, queer, and there’s quite a lot of dancing! It felt liberating for me to shoot the video. I noticed how much freer I felt in the way I expressed myself – and that makes me happy and excited.”
