I hope you all enjoyed the special Pride month editions of What’s Going On focusing specifically on party anthems by queer acts and artists that are beloved by the LGBTQIA+ community. Now back to our regularly scheduled programming. In this week’s instalment of What’s Going On, decade defining artists Kim Wilde and Boy George have teamed up for a collaboration, rising pop superstar Fletcher is back with her first new single of 2021 and I’ll get into the newest releases from Two Oceans & One Sea, Ziadie, and MNERVA. As always, if you like what you hear, be sure to stream and follow the artists.
Kim Wilde & Boy George – Enduring icons Kim Wilde and Boy George have both been incredibly productive in recent times, with Boy George vowing to release 60 tracks to celebrate turning 60 and Wilde preparing for the release of her forthcoming Pop Don’t Stop: Greatest Hits box set. The pair have teamed up for the powerful ballad “Shine On.” All about shining together and the joy of love, “Shine On” is uplifting and more importantly, beautifully sung. The industry veterans and longtime friends have amazing chemistry as this is their second collaboration this year, following the release of their song “Name and Number” earlier this year.

Fletcher – To quote one of daytime host Wendy Williams’ many memeable moments: “She’s got a point, she’s an icon, she’s a legend and she is the moment.” While she hasn’t reached icon or legend status yet, Fletcher should be the pop superstar of the moment. Her first single of 2021 is “Healing”, a raw and empowered anthem that speaks to being a work in progress and owning your struggle. On what “Healing” is about, Fletcher says: “We’re all healing from something. The world is healing right now. I can feel the collective energy of people waking up to their power and connecting to themselves in a way that humanity never has before.”

MNERVA – You’ve seen MNERVA on What’s Going On before with his track “Stuck” and now the talented young rap-rocker is back with his new single “Quarter Life Crisis.” Matt Wagner, best known as MNERVA, channels the best elements of nu metal acts like Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit on “Quarter Life Crisis” with his rapid fire raps over stadium-ready guitars. On what the ode to being in your mid-20s is all about, MNERVA says: “‘Quarter Life Crisis’ is my anthem to everyone who feels like they have no idea what they’re doing in their 20s. I feel like society tells us that success has a time limit and that you’re a failure if you haven’t ‘made it’ by 25. But in reality everyone’s journey is different.”

Two Oceans & One Sea – Two Oceans & One Sea is a duo that can truly be called a world band. Consisting of Turkish-Canadian singer-songwriter Malek Eye (lyrics and vocals) and Quebec musician Blaise Castonguay (keys and arranging), the duo blends elements of rap, poetry, and dance while pulling from diverse cultural influences. Their new single “In the Heart” is a lusty dance floor ready track that features house DJ Spezzo and multidisciplinary art Hollywoodjunkii, the alias of Club MTV dancer Lonnie Hughes. Give it a listen and let me know what you think.

Ziadie – It’s always cool when you get to see an artist achieve their first major career milestone on their journey to making it big. In this case, singer Ziadie has dropped his first ever music video to accompany his track “Illusive.” Directed by Darryl Shaw along with Ziadie, the video is a rollercoaster of emotions and perfectly matches the sultry yet tortured vibes of the song. “Illusive” is moody and mysterious while also being mischievous and shows that Ziadie seems to be right at home in the trap R&B Soundcloud streets. I’m looking forward to seeing what the promising young artist does next.
