It’s Sunday, you know what that means. I’m back with another instalment of What’s Going On. This week, I’ve got the newest release from a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee that’s going back to his roots, a debut single from a new Canadian duo, the latest song from an Israeli superstar and so much more. As always, if you dig what you’re hearing, be sure to stream and follow these artists.
Paul Stanley’s Soul Station – Iconic KISS frontman and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Paul Stanley has been developing a project over the past few years that pays tribute to the R&B and soul music that inspired him. Now he’s ready to share that project with the world in the form of NOW AND THEN, the first full-length album from Paul Stanley’s Soul Station which will be released on March 5 via UMe. NOW AND of Stanley and his 15-piece ensemble of talented musicians doing nine soul classics and five new original songs. The first taste of what’s to come from the new project is ‘O-O-H Child’, a cover of The Five Stairsteps hit, full of lush vocal harmonies and vibrant sounding horns. Personally speaking, I can’t wait to hear more.

Emotional Oranges – LA duo Emotional Oranges are out with their new single ‘Bonafide’ featuring Chiiild. The gorgeous track is all about reassuring a lover that you’re with them through good times and bad and that you’ve got solid unwavering love. Having won fans over around the world with The Juice Vol. 1 & Vol. 2, the mysterious R&B duo are gearing up towards the release of their upcoming project JUICEBOX. Speaking on what inspired ‘Bonafide’, Emotional Oranges say: “We were listening to a lot of Sade and The xx at the time. I wanted to make something that felt like it could score that iconic Black Swan mirror scene. Once we got locked in, Max from slenderbodies helped bring the idea to life in a couple hours. Getting the Chiiild vocals on the hook was the cherry on top – we’ve been looking for the right song to do together since tour.”

Softcult – Canadian duo Softcult are bursting onto the scene with ‘Another Bish’, their debut single. Kitchener, Ontario sisters Phoenix and Mercedes Arn-Horn cut their teeth performing locally before broadening their horizons to more of North America. The sisters describe their sound as “music for mall goths” which lets you know exactly what you’re in for. They cite Bikini Kill and Smashing Pumpkins as being two of their biggest influences and you can definitely hear that in the music. Their debut single manages to balance a brash attitude and refreshing vulnerability in a super palatable way. ‘Another Bish’ sounds like the start of a very promising career. Get on board now because it’s just a matter of time before Softcult breaks out in a major way.

BAD CHILD – It’s fair to say that some of the best new music is coming out of Canada now and BAD CHILD is proof of that. The Canadian singer-songwriter has dropped ‘$1,000,000’, his first new single of the year. The fun track samples local convenience store sounds, even down to the “Winner/Gagnant” that we all hear when someone plays the lottery in Ontario convenience stores. Speaking about his new single, BAD CHILD states: “I wanted $1,000,000 to sound and feel like a corner store lottery, when I was a child I would go with my grandmother and pick-up scratch tickets and she would always say we would win big. The song is about love conquering everything – everything pales in comparison.”BAD CHILD also announced his debut full-length album Free Trial which is due out on February 26.

Noga Erez – One of the boldest and up-front talents on the scene, Israeli singer-songwriter Noga Erez has announced her new album KIDS is due out March 26 via City Slang. Noga has also graced us all with ‘End of the Road’, her latest single. The dark hypnotic beat is infectious in the best way and juxtaposes nicely with Noga’s signature introspective lyrics, this time tackling mortality. The music video for the new song is also particularly striking. Speaking on the ‘End of the Road’ music video, Noga states: “The video doesn’t show an all-optimistic journey. It shows a complex one. The beauty of being completely innocent at one moment, from militant to vulnerable and then in control. That’s true to the journey we all go through, and what this video represents for me.”
