This week’s edition of What’s Going On features new music from three Canadian acts on the rise – Zach Zoya, Savannah Ré and Emanuel. As well as new music from singer-songwriter Julia Stone and purveyors of fun Argonaut & Wasp. If you dig what you’re hearing, be sure to stream and follow these artists.
Zach Zoya – Man of many talents, Montreal rapper, singer, and songwriter Zach Zoya has released his debut EP Spectrum via 7ième Ciel/Universal Music Canada. In addition to the new EP, Zoya has released a music video for his new single ‘Patience’ ft. UK artist Angel. Produced by heavy hitters Matthew Burnett, Boi-1da & Don Mills, ‘Patience’ is a gorgeous mid-tempo track that sees Zach Zoya showing off his R&B chops. On ‘Patience’, Zach Zoya says: “It’s about the long and tough road to happiness and the paradox that comes during that chase. I talk about that in the song when I say, ‘Every time I think of joy, I lose a little’ and ‘If I keep chasing happiness I’ll never find it, I think it’s just a matter of where your head is at.’ This song is me trying to remind myself that I’m in happiness right now, living this journey.”

Julia Stone – Australian folk singer-songwriter and one half of the duo Angus & Julia Stone, Julia Stone has announced that her new album Sixty Summers will be released on February 19 via BMG. Sixty Summers sees Julia Stone heading in a pop direction with production from Doveman and St. Vincent. Stone has also released ‘Dance’, the third single from her upcoming album. ‘Dance’ is light and airy and will not only have you in your feels reminiscing about those special moments with the one you love, but it’ll also have you up on your feet. The Jessie Hill directed music video features heartfelt and fun performances from superstar actors Susan Sarandon and Danny Glover as they act out the joy of new love. Without a doubt, the music video will stay with you long after viewing. This new direction for Julia Stone has me intrigued for what’s to come on Sixty Summers.

Emanuel – Canadian R&B singer-songwriter Emanuel is having a well-deserved moment. The London, ON-born crooner became the first-ever artist to be chosen for Spotify’s On The Radar program in Canada, and his songs have been featured on numerous Spotify, Apple, and Amazon Music playlists. His single ‘Black Woman’ and its accompanying music video are sure to keep the momentum going. An ode to Emanuel’s love and reverence for Black women, ‘Black Woman’ feels very timely though it’s origins pre-date the current climate. Explaining the meaning behind ‘Black Woman’, Emanuel says: “‘Black Woman’ is about reconciliation and also celebration – celebrating how strong our women are and how they hold us up,” says Emanuel. “People might think this song was written as a response to the moment right now but it’s saying the exact same thing it was saying when it was written a year ago – ‘I see you, I recognize you, I appreciate you and I love you’.”

Argonaut & Wasp – Brooklyn-based duo Argonaut & Wasp are back with ‘Pretend You Know’, their new single. Despite the fact that we’re well into autumn and the air is getting colder, ‘Pretend You Know’ is the ultimate good vibes summer jam. The boys of Argonaut & Wasp set out to make a track that captured the sound of the 60s & the 90s with a modern spin and they definitely nailed that vibe. On how ‘Pretend You Know’ came to be, Trey of Argonaut & Wasp says: “It was a crazy dream… Imagine sitting in the backseat of a car with Smash Mouth’s Steve Harwell (but is he really Guy Fieri?) dressed up as Sergeant Pepper ripping down ‘66 with Mike D as Co-Pilot playing all the unreleased Beastie Boys demo’s. Yea… so we wrote a song about it.” If that doesn’t tell you how much of a good time ‘Pretend You Know’ is, I don’t know what will.

Savannah Ré – Toronto’s R&B singer-songwriter Savannah Ré is the next one up. Produced by YogiTheProducer with additional production from Akeel Henry, the refreshing R&B jam ‘Solid’ is the new single off Savannah Ré’s highly anticipated debut EP Opia via Universal Music Canada. There’s a reason why outlets like HYPEBAE, Complex, CBC and ELLE Canada have all gotten behind Savannah Ré and it’s all in the music. On the message behind ‘Solid’, Savannah Ré says: “This message sort of started coming out, just about loyalty and asking the right questions within love. It was a message of sincerity which is why the chorus comes across as a plea rather than a demand; to stay down with each other through whatever may come, through thick and thin. We really took our time with this song over the year to create it.”
