Ty Segall Takes On ‘The Opposition’

Last fall, Ty Segall performed some solo acoustic shows in North America (including one in Toronto) and released some new tunes via Bandcamp. In December, he announced that these songs would be included on his upcoming album Freedom’s Goblin, which was set for release on January 26. He also performed one of these songs (“Fanny Dog”) on Conan.

Last night, Segall performed another tune (“My Lady’s on Fire”) on Comedy Central’s The Opposition with Jordan Klepper. It marks the first time a musical guest has appeared on the show, which premiered in September 2017. Klepper even incorporated Segall into some of the comedy bits.

I hadn’t seen The Opposition until now, but it’s quite funny. Klepper takes Stephen Colbert’s satirical version of Bill O’Reilly and runs with it, going deep into the ridiculous territory of Fox News but not quite going full Alex Jones. He even included Ty Segall into some of the comedy bits on the show; those who’ve seen Segall’s goofy humor in action won’t be surprised to learn that he held his own against Klepper’s antics. Those who haven’t seen the show before may be surprised, however, by the news that Segall wrote its theme song. You can watch the whole episode on Comedy Central (or, if you live in Canada, on The Comedy Network).

Segall, who seems like he tours nonstop, will be coming to Canada on April 11, performing at Toronto’s Danforth Music Hall. In the meantime, you can pre-order Freedom’s Goblin from Drag City.
