I threw on Attack and Release by The Black Keys, made a cup of coffee, sat down by my computer and, bopping my head to Strange Times, I started writing about S.H.I.E.L.D.
Did you know that the somewhat governmental espionage organization is celebrating their 50th anniversary this year?
That’s right. For the past month, Marvel Comics has been publishing one-off stories featuring characters intertwined with the organization as a means of lighting the candles and serving the cake to fans and revelers everywhere.
Today, it’s FURY: S.H.I.E.L.D. 50th Anniversary #1. Meet me after the jump for some birthday cake!

With Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ready to start up its third season in a few weeks, excitement is mounting for S.H.I.E.L.D.-related stories – not to mention the fact that there is the anniversary to celebrate.
I have to say, it’s amazing what the Marvel Cinematic Universe and it’s television footprint has been able to do for the concept of S.H.I.E.L.D. There are a bunch of characters affiliated with that organization that have become (or started to become) common lexicon in the world of pop culture: Nick Fury (the subject of today’s column), Mockingbird, Agent May, Fitz-Simmons, Agent Coulson, Quake, Mister Hyde, Hydra and, of course, Agent Peggy Carter.
S.H.I.E.L.D. has, in essence, become a briar patch for character development. And, really, it’s no wonder:
First appearing within the pages of Strange Tales #135 in August of 1965, S.H.I.E.L.D. was another result form the creative minds of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby – the guys that built Marvel Comics and many of the world-famous characters we know today.
Agent Nick Fury was part-and-parcel with the organization, and he’s passed the test of time: redrawn and re-interpreted through the ages but always holding a special place in the minds of Marvel Comics lovers.
Under the pen of writer David Walker and the pencil of artist Scott Hepburn, Fury: S.H.I.E.L.D. 50th Anniversary #1 is a mission that is fifty years in the making – an apt number to be sure. Nick Fury of the present is forced to team with the Nick Fury of the past to battle an old foe – but can these two distinct generations learn to work alongside each other to save the day?
This is the way to celebrate a fiftieth anniversary!
Make the run to your local comic book shop today and pick up Fury: S.H.I.E.L.D. 50th Anniversary #1. The cake is great – and the hero is even greater!
