At the start of the weekend, Biff Bam Pop! predicted good things for the Carrie remake, and continued success for special effects extravaganza Gravity. Our predictions didn’t bode so well for Escape Plan, which teams 1980s superstars Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Did the eighties make a comeback? Did Carrie use her telekinetic powers to defy Gravity? Check me after the jump to find out this weekend’s real numbers.
So, to recap, here were Biff Bam Pop’s predictions:
1) Carrie – $32 million
2) Gravity – $30 million
3) Captain Phillips – $20 million
4) Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 – $9 million
5) Escape Plan – $8 million
And here’s how things really turned out:
1) Gravity – $31 million
2) Captain Phillips – $17.2 million
3) Carrie – $17 million
4) Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 – $10 million
5) Escape Plan – $9.5 million
Hmmm… I guess there’s a lesson to be learned here. Never underestimate the draw of George Clooney and Sandra Bullock, as well as Tom Hanks. At least we nailed the money pretty close on Gravity. The new Carrie did at least as well as Tom, and Cloudy hangs in with ten million, and Sly and Arnold come in fifth with almost ten million.
The rest of the top ten is rounded out with Prisoners, The Fifth Estate, Runner Runner, Insidious Chapter 2, and Enough Said.
This coming Friday sees the release of The Counselor with Brad Pitt and Penelope Cruz, the erotic indie Blue Is the Warmest Color, and Johnny Knoxville in Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa.
