Marvel’s mutants hit the big screen this weekend in the prequel/reboot X-Men: First Class, which arrived in the top spot at the box office but managed to disappoint financially. Here’s how the weekend turned out:
Coming off the lackluster critical response to both X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the deck was stacked against Matthew Vaughn’s latest entry into the franchise. So while critics and fans have been giving the latest film top marks, it should come as no surprise that First Class didn’t perform nearly as well as the previous two films. We predicted a $65 million opening weekend, but the movie wound up with a just ok tally of $56 million. It’s going to take a while for X-Men: First Class to make back it’s budget (estimated between $140-160 million), but the bigger question will be if we’ll see a sequel or if it’s one and done for this class of mutants.
As for the rest of the box office, we nailed the order of the entire top 5 and came close to a few actual numbers:
The Hangover Part II continued to do big box office business, bringing in $32 million for a total gross of $186 million in two weekends. We had predicted a stronger hold of $40 million, but there’s no disputing how mammoth a success the film is.
Kung Fu Panda 2 hit number 3 with $24 million ($2 million more than our prediction) and a two week total of $100 million. Not too bad for a film that flew under the radar, but it does have the benefit of being the only family film in theaters at the moment.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides fell to the forth spot with $18 million, ($2 million less than our prediction). It currently sits at $190 million in North America, a decent but not spectacular showing when compared to the previous films in the franchise.
Rounding out the top 5 was Bridesmaids with $12 million in is fifth weekend in release, a number we nailed in our predictions. The film passed the $100 million mark this weekend for a total of $107 million.
So to recap, here are our predictions:
X-Men: First Class – $65 million
The Hangover Part II – $40 million
Kung Fu Panda 2 – $22 million
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides – $20 million
Bridesmaids – $12 million
And the actuals:
