Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Wrap-Up Report

You’d think having the biggest opening of the year so far would be cause for celebration, but even with $90 million debut, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is going to be viewed as a bit of a disappointment.

Scotty G predicted an opening of $122 million for the fourth film in the venerable Pirates franchise, but poor reviews and a relatively apathetic audience gave the series it’s lowest opening since it’s 2003 debut, when the original delivered over $46 million. While Pirates is guaranteed to hit $200 million minimum at the North American box office before it completes it’s run, I’d be very surprised to see it get close to $300 million. We’ll see how things play out in the coming weeks.

As the only comedy in theaters again this week, Bridesmaids took home a solid $21 million this weekend (Scotty predicted $18 million), down only 19% week to week. That’s a pretty amazing statistic, but one that won’t hold come next weekend and the release of The Hangover 2.

Thor had an unsurprising 55% drop in it’s third weekend out, bringing home $15 million for a North American total of $145 million. The decline should continue steadily so look for Thor to end it’s run this summer just narrowly missing the $200 million mark.

Coming in fourth at the box office was Fast Five, with $10 million (Scotty predicted $9 million), down 48% week to week for a total of $186 million in North America, making it the most successful film in the five picture old series. This is a huge success story and one that guarantees us that much talked about sixth film.

Rounding out the top 5 is Rio, with $4 million (Scotty G predicted $6.5 million). Rio has grossed $131 million off it’s $90 million budget.

Will Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides hold on to the number one spot next weekend? Could be tough, with the release of The Hangover 2. Check out our predictions this Friday!

  1. I saw it Friday, and I liked it. It seemed to be missing something or had too much of something but I really liked it. I loved the Mermaids!! Johnny is wonderful of course!

  2. It’s amazing! They always produce a great movie. Johnny Depp is always a great actor. It’s just sad that both Keira and Orlando are not cast anymore on this movie.
