For a supposed cult movie, I don’t know anybody who hasn’t at least heard of Richard Kelly’s Donnie Darko. It’s a true classic of the new millenium. In its original form, that is. I can’t say I’m even remotely a fan of the director’s cut that was released in 2004. I mean, Kelly removed Echo and The Bunnyman’s “The Killing Moon” from the opening scene and replaced it with INXS’ “Never Tear Us Apart”. The song may have been part of his original vision, but still! I couldn’t get past that change then and I doubt I ever will.
Richard Kelly has nothing to do with the forthcoming straight-to-DVD sequel
s. Darko, though Daveigh Chase will reprise her role as Donnie’s sister Samantha in the film. Back in 2001 Daveigh was 10 years old; suffice to say, she’s grown up since then. S. Darko also stars Ed Westwick, best known as Chuck Bass on Gossip Girl. The trailer for the film sure does feel like part of the same universe, so perhaps it may be not as unnecessary as one would think. Personally, I’m hoping for another dance scene set to a Duran Duran tune.
Check out the trailer for s.Darko here. It’s on DVD and Blu-Ray April 28th.
