Following the cancellation of their European tour in March due to an “urgent health issue,” husband-and-wife duo Handsome Furs delivered a blow to indie-pop fans late Thursday night; the band is no more. Dan Boeckner and wife Alexi Perry posted the following message (titled “The End.”) on their website:
“With a heavy heart the time has come to let all of you know that Handsome Furs are no more. The most important thing that needs to be said right now is how extremely grateful we are to all the fans all over the world that showered us with love and support over the years. Thank you for everything! It’s been an incredible 6 years and we owe it all to you. Xoxo”
There was never any further explanation on the tour cancellation, which of course, makes one wonder if there will be further information released on the demise of the band (or it’s connection to the former incident). What remains unmentioned is what this news may suggest for the personal relationship between Canadians Boeckner and Perry.
Biff Bam Pop noted last year’s Handsome Furs disc, Sound Kapital, as one of our staff favourites of 2011. A synth-pop band with hugely accessible sounds, I personally look to the band’s extremely NSFW imagery as the key argument for them not reaching the kind of mainstream success of sonically-similar Metric.
