Welcome back to another instalment of What’s Going On. This week’s stack is loaded with hot new tunes, rising names worth cranking up, and a standout collaboration that feels like a meeting of Canadian royalty, as Molly Johnson joins forces with Jim Cuddy to take on a beloved song from 1991. As always, if you dig what you hear, be sure to stream and follow these artists.
Molly Johnson & Jim Cuddy – We’ve got a Canadian collaboration of epic proportions. Molly Johnson and Jim Cuddy, two longtime pillars of Canada’s music scene, joined forces for a heartfelt take on The Tragically Hip’s “Long Time Running.” Stripping the 1991 CanCon rock anthem down to its emotional core, the pair deliver a warm, soulful tribute that feels both reverent and quietly powerful. It’s a gentle reminder that some songs only grow stronger with time.

Hush – We’re quickly becoming big fans of Montreal dream-pop trio Hush. The rising stars just dropped a hazy new single, “Phasing.” Led by Paige Barlow’s ethereal vocals, the track floats between memory and feeling. The lyrics and sonic textures come together to paint a warm, cyclical soundscape that’s easy to get lost in, in the best way. Keep an eye out for Hush’s forthcoming debut album on Simone Records. We’ll have more info on that soon!

AyoDylan – Ayo! Rising pop-punk firecracker AyoDylan is swinging for the fences with the announcement of his second EP, Knuckle Head. Due out May 27, the EP is led by his new single “Kurt Cobain (Play It Faster).” Packed with breakneck drums, crunchy guitars, and a self-aware, almost cocky swagger, the track is an anthem for chasing your dreams even when you feel like you might not be the best and brightest in the room.

Lavalove – SoCal has long been a hotbed for rock and indie rockers. Lavalove are keeping that reputation going with “Never Better,” a hypnotic new cut from their upcoming album TAN LINES. Equal parts surf-rock shimmer and indie grit, the track plays like a breakup pep talk you scream into the mirror—defiant, messy, and strangely triumphant. With sunburned hooks and swagger to spare, Lavalove proves heartbreak can still sound like summer.

Silverstein – Canadian post-hardcore veterans Silverstein are back with a hot new music video for “Stress,” stitched together from explosive moments across their global 25 Years of Noise tour. Can you believe it’s already been 25 years? A standout track from the band’s JUNO-nominated album Antibloom, “Stress” is fast and furious, hitting hard with plenty of tongue-in-cheek moments packed in. They’ve still got the goods!
