Heroes and Villains: Transformers #25 Begins the Kirkman/Mora Era

Skybound’s awesome Transformers title rolls on this week with issue #25!

Hey! Look at me…writing about comics again. How quaint. A couple of years back, I jumped at a chance to get an advanced look at the kick-off of the Energon Universe and their flagship Transformers book. The book quickly became the one I was looking forward to the most each month without fail. Daniel Warren Johnson and Jorge Corona really put everything they could on the page month after month for TWO YEARS, cementing this book as one of the all-time great runs in the 40-plus year publishing history of The Transformers.

I even bought the collected hardcover edition of the first half of their run, and I can’t wait for the second volume.

So…tough act to follow, right?

Official TRANSFORMERS #25 Synopsis: The Energon Universe will never be the same as the Autobots and Decepticons kick off the most surprising new chapter in their war on Earth. Optimus Prime and the remaining Autobots must join forces with unlikely allies in order to protect their adopted planet. But Prime’s next challenge lies closer to home than he ever imagined. And what is the fate of the Decepticons?

I’m as curious now as I was when this book was launched about how the title will be. I was curious about the creative team that was going to be taking over, and in hindsight, of course, Robert Kirkman was going to be taking the reins as the book’s writer. Who wouldn’t want to write a fun Transformers book? Especially if it’s your company that’s publishing the book? I’d have done the same given half a chance.

I was similarly ecstatic when it was announced that Dan Mora would be taking on art duties. I’ve been a fan of Mora’s work on DC’s Worlds Finest and Justice League Unlimited, and he’s got such a clean and classic style that meshes well with these characters. But don’t despair! Jorge Corona sticks around for a bit of this issue, providing some connective tissue between the two eras of this title.

Transformers #25 also has some nifty surprises that I can’t spoil here, and it’s also pretty safe to say that you wouldn’t want Megatron as a boss…
