When I was a child, and I mean, probably five, six, or seven years old, I had a very specific dream. I wanted to be a private detective. My inspiration was the television series Remington Steele, starring Pierce Brosnan. I watched it and thought I’d make a pretty good detective, even though I couldn’t reach the top shelves.
While that dream may not have worked out, I still appreciate the concept of a good mystery, and there’s no creator like the late, legendary Agatha Christie, whose classic tale, Death on the Nile, has found new life as a video game from Microids.

In Death on the Nile, a peaceful cruise turns into a nightmare when a murder shatters the tranquillity of the voyage. Fortunately, renowned detective Hercule Poirot is on board. At the same time, a parallel investigation led by private detective Jane Royce takes players from London to Mallorca, New York, and finally to Egypt. The two storylines converge in Abu Simbel, where this dynamic investigative duo must solve a tangled case full of twists and intrigue.

Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot has experienced a significant increase in recognition over the past few years, largely due to the recent films starring and directed by Kenneth Branagh. The addition of a new character, Jane Royce, to Death on the Nile introduces a distinct level of intrigue and storytelling to a narrative that has long been a staple of detective fiction. Credit to voice actors Geoffrey Bateman and Chloe Dunn, who do a great job bringing Poirot and Royce to life, respectively. Bateman delivers an exceptionally strong performance, especially when portraying Poirot in close proximity to Branagh’s recent interpretations.
It’s worth noting that Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile‘s graphics are not spectacular on the PS5, but the story and puzzle-solving make up for any visual shortcomings. Make no mistake, this is all about solving things – puzzles and multiple mysteries. It asks you to put your thinking hat on, as it were, and rewards exploration and patience, as you piece together various tasks and character motivations. Deduction is a significant aspect of the game, particularly in finding connections between characters and their actions. Much like being a detective in real life, I’d imagine.
If, like me, you ever dreamt of being a P.I., Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile is a fun way to get to live out the fantasy without any of those pesky dangers and consequences that come with the job in real life.
