Exclusive Interview: Stephen Chung, Director of ‘It’s All Gonna Break’

This weekend sees the release of It’s All Gonna Break, director Stephen Chung’s in-depth look at the creation and musical experience of Broken Social Scene, one of the most important and influential bands of the past 25 years.

The renowned collective’s earliest musical moments were captured by their friend Stephen’s video camera from their incubation through their worldwide success.

Having the chance to interview Stephen Chung was very personal for me. I took my 14-year-old daughter Anya to see It’s All Gonna Break when it premiered in Toronto back in January, and as I told Stephen in our chat, I’d never seen my kid so engaged with a film. Anya is a massive fan of Broken Social Scene and Metric, and it was inspiring to see the magic of music and Stephen’s film move her. Along with delving into the creation of It’s All Gonna Break, Stephen’s own background, and looking back at the music community of Toronto, getting the chance to tell him how much the film meant to us was a real privilege for me.

You can watch my chat with Stephen, sitting with BSS member Kevin in the back of a New York City cab on the way to a screening, below.

It’s All Gonna Break is now playing in select theaters. You can find the one nearest you here. Thanks to Stephen for his time, and Ripsimie and the folks at MPRM for making it happen.
