Figure Friday: A Perfect Robin Almost Makes a Bad Week Better…Almost

While I was out today, I got called “sir,” and somehow, that wasn’t the worst fucking thing that happened this week.

Hey, Caption Writer here, if you don’t see a problem with anything that happened this week: Fuck you.

Since before Christmas, I’ve been vacillating between gathering supplies to stock in my basement and going apeshit on frivolous purchases. I can only imagine where I’d be right now if I hadn’t gone back on an SSRI in August. When I got called “sir,” the pendulum swung back towards frivolous, and I was in Target’s toy aisle, not finding anything of note. I purchased some medical supplies to use for bartering when society finally collapses.

It should also be noted that I learned my lesson four years ago and now have both a bidet and ample supply of toilet paper. I won’t be caught with my pants down again.

We’ll get to the toy talk in a moment but I’m just so god damn tired. There’s a whole lot I like to say but every cloying meme I’ve seen the last few days has been urging me to “not give up hope!” or “make art and rebel!” While I appreciate the sentiment and don’t begrudge anyone for doing what they need to do to cope, it still feels like an awful lot like rolling over to me. I’m equal parts proud of and concerned with myself that I didn’t go crawl into a bottle each night as soon as I logged off of work. I’m not a sober person, but getting shitfaced is rarely the answer. I’m concerned that I’m getting desensitized or that the white-hot rage I’ve felt for so long has been relegated to a low boil.

I hope you’re ready for a tonal whiplash cuz here come tha toyz.

Batman: Hush MAFEX No.264 Robin

Practicing some sweet moves with my bo staff or something.I don’t know I never saw that movie.

Before this figure dropped for preorder today I’d planned to write about the new Star Trek Starships collection from Fanhome (and still may!) and wax optimistic about how the utopian vision of the future Trek depicts is either aspirational or total bullshit. We’ll see where we are in the next two weeks.

I don’t recall precisely when the prototype pictures of this Robin figure hit the internet but I’m fairly confident I’ve been waiting years for its official release. After gazing upon to promotional pics it appears to have been well worth the wait.

It looks like we’re finally getting a perfect comic-accurate Robin figure modelled after Jim Lee’s art from the Batman: Hush storyline. Timeline-wise, this is the Tim Drake version of Robin, my personal favourite. It doesn’t matter that they once gave him a doo-doo brown costume, and he legitimately changed his codename to Drake (way to have a secret identity there, pal). He’s still been a consistently excellent character…and, in recent years, an LGBTQ+ icon! If that last bit makes you mad, grow up and, statistically, one of the Robins had to be…and we’re all surprised it wasn’t Dick Grayson.

There’s a whole pant-load of accessories that comes with this figure, too:

  • Robin figure
  • Alternate head sculpt
  • Interchangeable hands
  • Bo staff
  • Cape
Okay, give us ‘thumbs up’ but be ANGRY about it!

It’s also worth noting that Tim Drake was the first Robin to cleanly break from the pixie boots and booty shorts look that had defended the character for decades. Classic Robin was definitely a vibe, but it’s an all-timer in the category of questionable comic costumes.

This figure is due out in November, so preorder it now if you, like me, desperately need something to look forward to.
