Exclusive Interview: Anya Talks to Vtuber Rin Penrose

Hello everyone! It’s Anya. I know you haven’t seen me in a while, but that’s because I was setting up an interview with my all time favourite Vtuber, Rin Penrose. A Vtuber is someone who does content creation (YouTube, streams, etc) and uses an animated character to remain somewhat anonymous.

I first discovered Vtubers through Hololive English’s Gawr Gura, but only really got into them when I found independent Vtuber Punkalopi. As someone who has a hard time paying attention, I was hooked by Lopi’s fast speaking and entertaining personality.

My taste in Vtubers stayed pretty much the same for a while, being primarily Punkalopi, CyYu, and AmaLee. But that changed on November 20th, 2022 when a small Vtuber agency called Idol Corp debuted their newest talents, an English speaking branch called E-Sekai. Made up of Yuko Yurei, Juna Unagi, Rin Penrose, Pochi Wanmaru and Fuyo Cloverfield, E-Sekai had a variety of personalities to watch.

On March 7th, 2023, Rin Penrose posted a short that blew up. As of writing, it has 1.9M million views. That short then appeared on my YouTube shorts page. I started getting Rin short after Rin short, so I caved and subscribed to this British shark-loving anime girl who kept showing up on my feed. Next thing I knew, I was watching every stream, every short, every video.

On July 31st 2024, it was announced that Idol Corp had been obtained by successful Vtuber company Brave Group US. The company gave the talents the choice to stay in the agency, or leave while keeping their IP’s. Most stayed, but Juna Unagi, Kattarina Qutie, Fuyo Cloverfield, Meica05, and, of course, Rin Penrose, decided to go independent.

I’d wanted to interview Rin for a while, and the announcement finally gave me a reason; I’d able to talk to Rin about the difference between corpo and indie Vtubing. So I reached out to Rin’s manager Zoey, we set up a date, and it happened. It was absolutely incredible for me. The day came, I got into my Rin Penrose shirt, and sat down to get on a Discord call with her. She was so nice and enthusiastic when it came to my questions, giving me answers and being just all around amazing to speak to.

Big thanks to Zoey for helping make this happen. Zoey appears throughout our interview as well.

At the time of writing this, Rin has a plushie available for only 13 days on Makeship, which you can purchase here.
