Excerpt From City of Night: The Films of Los Angeles – Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (1970)

“The purpose and plan for City of Night is to explore many of those films in a variety of ways, including but not limited to reviews, reflections and interviews with creators. And we’ll both celebrate and understand the impact Los Angeles has had on writers, actors, and directors, along with audiences who may never attempt to merge on a Los Angeles freeway.”

The latest instalment is a look at Russ Meyer’s controversial 1970 film, Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. You can read an excerpt below:

A movie written by a novice screenwriter better known as a film critic; a director best known for his X-rated titillating features; and a cast renowned for their cup sizes rather than their acting talent.

By rights, Beyond the Valley of the Dolls should be a disaster. And yet, this 1970 film was a financial success for 20th Century Fox upon its release, while its critical appreciation has only grown over the decades.
