In The Game: Wade Stokan Looks at Sony’s State of Play for May 2024

Thursday marks the third showcase Sony has prepared for us this year! This time we’ve got roughly 30 minutes of trailers, news, and updates on some upcoming PS5 and PSVR2 games coming this year and next. If you don’t have the time to watch the full stream, fear not! Here is a recap of everything announced today!

CONCORD

Sony begins the showcase with a look at Firewalk Studios’ new 5v5 character focused shooter Concord. The trailer feels very Guardians of the Galaxy-inspired and features a very interesting group of guns for hire! We’re then shown some gameplay that highlights the different characters and their various abilities in combat. While we were only shown a handful of characters, I am sure there will be more to see down the line. Some of them are magic users, some are gunslingers, some are hulking robots.

Concord will be released August 23rd, but there will be a beta in July.

GOD OF WAR RAGNAROK FINALLY COMES TO PC

God of War Ragnarok is coming to PC on September 19th! PC gamers will finally get the chance to play one of my personal favourite games in recent memory. The Valhalla DLC will be included, as well as unlocked framerates, support for ultra-wide monitors, and many other PC exclusive graphics options.

DYNASTY WARRIORS ORIGINS

Hack and slash fans rejoice! A new Dynasty Warriors game approaches! KoeiTecmo announces their newest addition to the Dynasty Warriors franchise, Dynasty Warriors Origins. You play as a nameless hero who will fight armies the size of which has never been seen in the series. The Playstation blog post explains that KoeiTecmo is using the PS5 technology that will “provide massive armies as far as the eye can see.” Fans of previous Dynasty Warrior releases are likely foaming at the mouth reading that.

Dynasty Warriors Origins will be made available later this year on the PS5.

INFINITY NIKKI, A NEW RPG WITH A BETA TEST LATER THIS YEAR

Infinity Nikki is apparently an “open-world dress-up adventure,” according to the Playstation blog post. Nikki and her cat friend Momo will explore different nations of the continent of Miraland. Each nation will have its own sense of culture and history to learn about and to experience. There appears to be many different outfits to collect, as well as some extremely vibrant environments and some combat as well. Attached to this project is former Legend of Zelda director Kentaro Tominaga.

No release date has been announced yet, but we will be getting a beta test later this year.

WHERE WINDS MEET

We wound up getting a second look at the upcoming action-adventure game Where Winds Meet. Set in the Ten Kingdoms era of Chinese history, you play a fearless warrior who is apparently crucial to how the entire conflict plays out. The decisions you make and the battles you fight are paramount to how the story unfolds.

There is no release date announced yet for Where Winds Meet, but I hope it’s soon, because this looks great.

BALAD OF ANTARA, A NEW FREE-TO-PLAY RPG RELEASING NEXT YEAR

Balad of Antara is a brand new IP being developed by TipsWork Studio. TipsWork explains that they are trying to create a vast world in terms of actual size as well as cultural variation. Things are pretty ho-hum in the regular version of the world. However in the alternate version of the world, “peculiar sightings and encounters await.” The story begins when sections of the real world get lost inside this alternate world they call Para.

Balad of Antara is set to release sometime in 2025.

BEHEMOTH AND ALIEN: ROGUE INCRUSION. TWO NEW PSVR2 GAMES

Behemoth is being developed by Skydance Games. They are the studio behind The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners. In Behemoth you have to endure the blistering cold and dangerous enemies in “The Forsaken Lands.” Once a thriving civilization, The Forsaken Lands are now nothing more than a barren wasteland.

The official Behemoth website states the game should release sometime in October.

If sci-fi horror is more your scene than you will be thrilled to know that there is a new Alien game coming to PSVR2 this year. Players will play a currently unnamed protagonist who must explore and survive in a facility filled to the brim with Xenomorphs. Alien: Rogue Incrusion is a single-player-horror-VR experience.

Alien: Rogue Incursion will be coming out this holiday season.

MARVEL RIVALS IS CONFIRMED FOR PS5 WITH A BETA IN JULY

Marvel Rivals is a superhero character based PVP team shooter featuring all your favourite Marvel heroes and villains. This game had already been announced, but it is now confirmed to be getting a PS5 release. While we didn’t get to see anything we hadn’t seen already, we did get to see more gameplay, which is never a bad thing. There will be a closed beta test in July, and you know we’ll be covering that if we get a beta code!

ANOTHER LOOK AT THE REMAKE OF UNTIL DAWN

The Until Dawn remake was confirmed earlier this year, but Sony wanted to make sure we get a better look at the PS5 version of the horror classic. This trailer also confirms that Rami Malek’s likeness will be continued to be used. We already had confirmation that Hayden Pannettiere would be back, and now we see that Rami is too.

We still don’t have a release date, but we do know that Until Dawn will be scaring your socks off in Fall of 2024!

PATH OF EXILE 2 IS GETTING AN EARLY ACCESS LATER THIS YEAR

The sequel to the hit dungeon-crawler Path of Exile has already been announced and looks fantastic. I am so elated to see that it has been confirmed to be coming to the PS5! This exciting announcement gets even better as the trailer confirms that there is two-player couch co-op being added. I personally cannot wait to play this game for hours and hours with a friend!

Path of Exile 2 has an early access releasing late 2024.

SILENT HILL 2 RELEASE DATE CONFIRMED

Konami and Bloober Team confirmed that the highly anticipated remake of the horror classic Silent Hill 2 will be releasing on October 8th, 2024. In Silent Hill 2 you play as James Sunderland. After receiving a letter from his dead wife, James must a pilgrimage to Silent Hill in search of answers. The trailer shown in the State of Play focuses a lot more on the combat and the Resident Evil style over-the-shoulder camera, which has become a horror game staple. There was a lot more information shown directly after the State of Play came to a conclusion, as Konami had their very own stream to showcase some more Silent Hill 2 gameplay and information.

MONSTER HUNTER WILDS

After Monster Hunter Wilds was announced at The Game Awards last year, fans have been clamouring for more info. Well, Sony and Capcom heard those wishes and decided to share an extended look at the game. We see some brand new monsters and some additional mounted gameplay. Monster Hunter World is among my personal favourite games, so I cannot wait to sink my teeth into this one when it launches next year.

TEAM ASOBI WRAPS UP THE STATE OF PLAY SHOWCASE WITH ASTRO BOT

If you have been paying attention to the rumour mill lately, you may have heard whispers about a new Astro Bot game in development. Well the rumours are now confirmed with the announcement of Team Asobi’s Astro Bot. This is the same team who made the free Astro’s Playroom ,which is a stunning and endlessly fun showcase of the DualSense Controller and PS5 graphical fidelity. Astro Bot has become a new mascot for the console and his games have actually been super high quality. The trailer for Astro Bot is brimming with personality, colour, and most importantly, exciting and engaging gameplay. The trailer boasts terrific music, plenty of PlayStation icons making cameos, and challenging platforming. Astro’s Playroom was a speedrunners’ dream, and Astro Bot looks like it will be too.

Astro Bot will be releasing much sooner than expected – September 6, 2024.
