Gilbert Speaks on ‘The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live S01 E03’

I am sorry that I’m late with this review, but my computer was traveling via the slowest moving truck in history. That said, I’m glad that I had a few days to think about the latest episode of The Ones Who Live. This episode made me angry. Angry at Rick, and angry for every woman who has ever had to become the backbone of the man she loves.

Bye

There are a few flashbacks in this episode that piece together some missing information. Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh) did save Rick’s (Andrew Lincoln) life, but it was to help her move up in the ranks. So, the fact that Rick was listed as a B is the dirty little secret that they keep between themselves. I feel that Jadis instinctively knew that Rick would eventually give up on escaping from the CRM.

Jadis used the threat of going after friends and family to keep Rick in line…but now…Michonne (Danai Gurira) is on the scene, and Jadis knows that Michonne is the biggest threat to her position in the CRM. As I said in last week’s review, Michone was never the type of person that could be forced to “Blend in.” Jadis isn’t the only person who is uneasy with Michonne being in the picture. Pearl Thorne (Lesley-Ann Brandt) has taken over Okafor’s (Craig Tate) post, and I think Pearl has feelings for Rick.

Michonne tries blending in, but she is constantly on Rick’s back about escaping. She wants to get back home to her children. Rick keeps coming up with excuses. After the funeral for Okafor, Major General Beale (Terry O’Quinn) politely lets Rick know that he is keeping an eye on him. Beale doesn’t trust Rick, and at this point even Michonne is questioning his reason for not escaping…that is until Rick tells her about the perfect escape plan, boat included.

Conclusion with Spoilers

Rick never intended to leave with Michonne, and she realizes this when she finds the note inside the boat that says, “If you love me, you will leave.” Now we know that Rick loves Michonne, and that she loves him, but damn!!!! You do not want to piss off Michonne. Rick is shocked to see Michonne back on duty the next day.

After Rick prevents Pearl from killing Michonne while on a mission, Rick tells Michonne that she needs to go. Their love is broken. The look on Michonne’s face when Rick says these words is truly heartbreaking. She left her kids for this man. I think it’s at this point that Nat’s (Matthew Jeffers) last words come back to haunt her.

Michonne is a Ninja Warrior, and she refuses to give up on Rick, especially after going to the bazaar and finding the artist who carved the pictures on all the phones that were left for her to find. Rick might have lost his balls and his perspective, but Michonne has not. They are going home together even if it means jumping out of a helicopter during a thunderstorm.

I can’t wait until the next episode!
