From the House of Ideas: Getting Primed for “Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3”

I’m not sure if you’ve heard, but there’s a new Guardians of the Galaxy film coming out.

Of course you’ve heard.

Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 is due in theatres May 5, so it makes a lot of sense that the House of Ideas would get out some new books to tie-in with the final ride of Quill, Groot, Gamora, Mantis, Rocket, Nebula, and Drax.

This past week saw the release of Guardians of the Galaxy #1, a new ongoing written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly and illustrated by Kev Walker. The story is definitely a Western-inspired tale, but with a seriously sci-fi bent. The bad news is, there’s a lot that’s happened to this crew of characters over the past decade in the world of comics, and I definitely felt as though I was missing out not having the backstory to go along with the book. The good news is the this first issue sets up a big bad that could lead to some unique stories as the Guardians of the Galaxy have to contend with one of their own.

One year ago, the Guardians of the Galaxy were destroyed. Their optimistic future shattered by the betrayal of one of their own. Now they ride the space lanes of a lawless corner of the galaxy, trying to outrun their tragedy. Can they rediscover their heroism and humanity on the bleakest frontier? Can they forgive the failures of their past? Or will they fade into the dark, eternally unforgiven? Writers JACKSON LANZING and COLLIN KELLY (CAPTAIN AMERICA: SENTINEL OF LIBERTY) team up with artist KEV WALKER (PREDATOR) for a Guardians story like no other!

Playing catch-up can be fun, though, and I highly recommend picking up Star-Lord: The Saga of Peter Quill, a recently released compilation of stories focusing on the titular character. From his origin story and his earliest adventures with the Ravagers to encounters with big villains and future comrades, the collection is a great pot pourri of writers and artists who all do excellent work in telling entertaining Star-Lord tales.

Collects STAR-LORD (2015) #1-5, THANOS (2003) #7-12, ANNIHILATION: CONQUEST – STARLORD #1-4 and GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY (2013) #0.1. The stirring story of Star-Lord! Before Peter Quill was a Guardian of the Galaxy, he was…an astronaut! Or at least he wanted to be. But as NASA’s biggest burnout, Quill seemed destined to stay grounded on Earth. Now, discover how he finally journeyed out into the galaxy! But getting off-world is one thing – surviving is another. Especially when Yondu and his space pirates find him! Plus: Relive Star-Lord’s pre-Guardians adventures: teaming with Thanos of Titan against a cosmic threat lurking in a galactic prison – and meeting Rocket Raccoon, Groot and Mantis on a high-stakes mission against the techno-organic Phalanx! But what deadly secrets lurk in Quill’s past on Earth, and what will they mean for his future in space?
