This edition of Figure Friday is all about my own personal torment. Read on to see me both hem AND haw over the agony of really cool, but really expensive, toys.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles One:12 Collective Deluxe Boxed Set

I am possibly the last collector I know that hasn’t danced the Mezco One:12 dance by now. Seriously, everyone I talk to has plunked down their hard-earned dough for one of these things and I have manage to abstain for years and years because one never caught my fancy.
As fate would have it one didn’t catch my fancy…four did.
Mezco first teased the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles being added to the One:12 line just over a year ago and I had pledged to “wait and see,” but could already feel myself breaking out in a cold sweat. If the figures were good, and I mean really good, I’d start with a Donatello and then chip away at remaining three as my budget allowed. It’s how I did it in the ’80s and it was good enough for me back then.
What I didn’t anticipate was that Mezco would drop all four Turtles at once in an epic boxset with a hefty $400 (USD) price tag. They look amazing and I promptly removed Super7’s TMNT Ultimates from my Amazon wishlist…these were going to join NECA’s TMNT: The Movie figures on the mountain top.

In the FF Year End Review podcast (which you should totally listen to if you haven’t already), I discussed with fellow FF columnist Josh that my collection is all about getting “definitive” versions of characters I love. Josh put forth that the One:12 Wolverine was exactly that for him and, in so many words, I remained unconvinced. Until just about a month later when I was cursed by my own hubris.
Seriously, it changes daily on whether or not I’ll preorder these. $400 is no small chunk of change and I’ve got all sorts of dumb adult stuff to do like buying doors, replacing windows, and having a dohickey added to my furnace. In short, “$400? In THIS economy???”
The other thing that’s making me think I should pull the trigger is that these aren’t estimated to ship until December of this year. While that definitely could be classified as a “Future Me” problem since I won’t be charged until then, it’s also possible that I wouldn’t be charged until even later! You see, based on a bunch of hearsay I know that some One:12 figures get announced way, WAY in advance of when they’ll ship. The ’89 Batman figure that was put up for preorder THREE YEARS AGO still has yet to materialize.

So there you have it, watch this space to see if I cave or not. Also, check out all the cool stuff these figures come with!

The Rocketeer & Betty Deluxe 1/12 Scale Figure Set
New from Executive Replicas and Loose Collector is a figure set that some of us have been waiting decades for! A comic accurate version of the Rocketeer! And Betty!

After seen Disney’s The Rocketeer in the summer of ’91, I wanted nothing more than to go to Toys ‘r’ Us, Children’s Palace, or even KB Toys and grab a Rocketeer action figure but I had to settle for Robin Hood Price of Thieves figures. Settling for those figures marked the beginning of a decades-long depression that I still struggle with to this very day.
However, it wasn’t all bleakness and repurposed Kenner Super Powers and Star Wars figures that summer. No, I was gifted a copy of The Rocketeer #3 by my cool aunt and was immediately taken with Dave Stevens’ amazing art and the pulpy adventure feel of the comic. I learned early on in my life that no matter how great a movie can be the source material is often leaps and bounds better.
While it’s true that there have been other Rocketeer figures in the years since the movie, none of them have ever really done it for me. Yeah, they were neat and I was glad that there were toys being made but they didn’t seem to live up to the toy I had pictured in my mind..until now!
You can preorder these figures now and they’re scheduled for a July release. Look at all the stuff they come with!
