Here I am, blowing the dust of my keyboard for another installment of Figure Friday brought to you by the fine folks Outrun Collectibles, a super cool and CANADIAN online toy store! If you use code BIFFBAMPOP you can get 15% off your order! Check it out…please. They left a McFarlane The Batman figure in my mailbox that was missing its head. I think this was a threat.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Classics
I write about TMNT a lot. So much so that I’ve already made a joke marveling at the evergreen (hey-hey) nature of the franchise. I think of of the reasons I keep coming back to the Turtles is that I’ve liked pretty much every incarnation of the series. The fanbase seems pretty chill too insomuch that I don’t think I’ve seen a single online interaction amongst fan where one fan will threaten to kill another over which version of the show is the best. Admittedly, I haven’t looked too hard for that sort of thing and it for sure is easier to find in some other fandoms (coughStarWarscough).
Should you be so inclined to go all the way back to the beginning of the green marketing machine, you can preorder some Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Classics right now. In yet another testament to the brand’s longevity, this has got to be the fourth or fifth time they re-released replicas of the OG TMNT toys. Believe me, that’s not something I’m mad at because on one hand they’re cool bits of nostalgia art and on the other they’re still remarkably good figures.
I slowly but surely worked my way through collecting the four core Turtles in grade school (Raphael was the last to arrive which is typical now that I think about it), picking up Shredder, BeBop, and a Foot Soldier along the way. I never managed to snag April, Splinter, or Rocksteady but by then I was all-in on collecting all other mutants that were on offer, each one grosser than the last. I hung in with the line for quite a while, but my interest started flagging when the line got a bit too…wait for it…silly.
Humanoid turtles who are also color coded ninjas? You’ve got my attention. But if you put those same turtles who are also ninjas in say a clown costumer or a football uniform? That’s a big ask for me personally.
All four of the Turtles are up for preorder along with the Party Wagon AND the Turtle Blimp. Why would they have a blimp? I don’t know but it sure looks cool.
Tamashii Nations dropped a teaser for the S.H. Figuarts The Batman on their Instagram page a couple weeks ago and I’ve already told my McFarlane Batmen that they are DEAD to me. No additional details have been released yet, but I’m sure the figure will come with a myriad of hands, accessories, and a face that’s not giving your other figures the side-eye.
It’s not the first time S.H. Figuarts has tried their hand at Batman either. I’ve got both The Dark Knight and Batman ’89 in my collection and can confirm both are rad as hell. I almost picked up the Justice League Batman because if you’re able to divorce yourself from all the hubbub surrounding those movies, it actually looks like a decent figure. Save Martha!
Presently, I’m waiting for my Figuarts Boba Fett (from The Mandalorian) to ship which is heavily contingent upon my MAFEX Knightfall Batman to arrive. As I’m sure many of you toy collectors know, the dreaded supply chain issues are still impacting the toy industry pretty hard and possibly even harder for small run import figures such as these. My Knightfall Batman was supposed to ship around the same time as my MAFEX Spider-Man which was November of last year.
I’m sure it’ll ship eventually and until then my Visa card can rest easy.
