What’s Going On: Greta Van Fleet, High Contrast, Chika, Roosevelt, Rebecca Garton

This week’s edition of What’s Going On features new music from Greta Van Fleet, Rebecca Garton, Chika, High Contrast and Roosevelt. Rock, dance, and R&B – the works! As always, if you dig what you’re hearing, be sure to stream and follow these artists.

Greta Van Fleet – Michigan rockers Greta Van Fleet recently announced their sophomore album The Battle at Garden’s Gate due out April 16 via Lava/Republic Records. The boys also dropped ‘Age of Machine’, the second single from their upcoming album. ‘Age of Machine’ sees the band tackling innovation, technology and how disconnected we all are despite being so plugged in. After numerous #1 Billboard Mainstream Rock singles, a Grammy win and successful tours, Greta Van Fleet – vocalist Josh Kiszka, guitarist Jake Kiszka, bassist Sam Kiszka, and drummer Danny Wagner – have shown that they are here to stay. A personal favourite band of mine, after hearing ‘Age of Machine’ and the previous single ‘My Way, Soon’, I’m very excited to hear what else Greta Van Fleet has in store on The Battle at Garden’s Gate.

High Contrast – Lincoln Barrett, best known as High Contrast, recently released his new album Notes From The Underground and the standout track for me is easily ‘Met Her At A Dance In Leicester’, which features UK Apache & Ady Suleiman. The track is Welsh DJ High Contrast’s spin on 2001’s ‘Get Up’ by Badmarsh & Shri featuring UK Apache. It’s a real treat to hear UK Apache sounding as great as ever. On what he set out to do with the track, High Contrast says: “This track is a fusion of oldskool jungle and nuskool soul. It was an honour to have the legendary UK Apache perform on a tune and he makes for an interesting contrast to the smooth soulfulness of Ady.”

Chika – Multitalented performer Chika has released ‘FWB’, her new single on Warner Records. As you can imagine from the song title, it’s all about being friends with benefits. The Alabama-born rapper, singer, actress and activist effortlessly goes from singing to rapping on the dreamy new track. Her delivery and the sensual vibe perfectly capture the feeling of a nighttime friends with benefits encounter. ‘FWB’ comes after Chika not only contributed her song ‘My Power’ to the soundtrack of Netflix’s film Project Power, she also acted in it alongside Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon Levitt. If you weren’t already familiar with Chika, she is definitely one to watch.

Roosevelt – 2020 has turned out to be the year of artists revisiting the disco era and Roosevelt is keeping that trend going with ‘Strangers’, his new single from his upcoming album Polydans which is due out on February 26, 2021 via City Slang/Greco-Roman. Marius Lauber, best known as Roosevelt, seamlessly blends disco, house, strings and even a bit of yacht rock on ‘Strangers’. On how ‘Strangers’ came to be, Roosevelt says: “It started as a French house-inspired loop, which had just the bass line and a drum sample, but I layered so many instruments on top of it, that it turned into this very rich yacht rock production. It also features a recording of real strings, played by the infamous Kaiser Quartett, who are touring with Chilly Gonzales.”

Rebecca Garton – Rising UK R&B diva Rebecca Garton is getting ‘Comfortable’ with American R&B artist Jeremih. With a fun beat and breezy vocals from both Rebecca and Jeremih, ‘Comfortable’ is a fun burst of pop-R&B confection. The song has also recently been giving a bright dancefloor ready remix by DJ Majestic which is also worth a listen. On how she hopes ‘Comfortable’ makes listeners feel, Rebecca says: “I wanted people listening to this track to get that good old school R&B feel good feeling from the production to the groove to the lyrics. I wanted you to listen to it and feel that feeling of love and happiness. The little warm fuzzy feeling you get in your stomach when you meet a person you like.”
