It’s no secret that I’m a bit of a mark for Luca Guadagnino’s love stories, but even if I weren’t, I’d be taken with the lush beauty of his new HBO miniseries We Are Who We Are. It’s a coming-of-age story about two teenagers growing up near a US military base in Italy, set in 2016, but its beats seem so authentic and well-observed that it could take place almost anywhere. A fantastic cast, including Chloe Sevigny, Kid Cudi, and Alice Braga are there to flesh out this story, but its stars Jack Dylan Grazer and Jordan Kristene Seaman may be poised for stardom.
“I feel like on the one hand that this is a new film of mine,” the director said in an interview with Variety. “It feels like a movie to me, but I enjoyed the episodic-ness of the story. This is a series and it depends on how it clicks with an audience if we will see these people again. I have sort of a penchant for bringing back to life characters that I love. I truly love all the characters in this show. The greatness of doing TV is that if there’s a good outcome, this can come back, which would be beautiful to me.”
