In a previous gift guide entry, I mentioned that I had largely parted ways with physical media, save for books and comics. Well…there should have been an asterisk on that. Like SO MANY people out there I, too, have dipped my toe into the pool that is vinyl collecting.
Mind you, I haven’t completely shunned digital music as it still makes up 99% of how I listen to things. There’s something about the ritual of listening to a record, the physical act of putting it on the turntable and blah, blah, blah. I’m stopping short of “it just sounds warmer, mannnn” because the sentiments I’m expressing above aren’t particularly new or earth shattering. I just like doing it, get off my back already.
All that being said, I try to limit my record purchases to ones I consider “essential” for my collection and oddities that are just too fun to pass up. It’s one of those hobbies I have to keep a firm hand on or it could threaten to derail my life. I don’t want to be the guy digging through the dollar bins at a flea market looking for some obscure jazz record with a misprinted sleeve. Not my scene.
What is exactly my scene is the Enjoy The Ride Records release of Hasbro Studios Presents ‘80s TV Classics: Music From The Transformers. The title doesn’t really leave much to the imagination and it’s exactly what it sounds like, music from the first three seasons of The Transformers.
It’s all there! The iconic Transformers theme and all the other bits of music composed for the show from 1984 onward. Also, my favorite part, it comes on colored vinyl. The second pressing, which is still available in limited quantities, has Optimus Prime, Megatron, and Starscream color splits which look amazing.
The first pressing sold out in about fifteen minutes and I was fortunate enough to snag one of the Optimus Prime “splatter” records. It also occurs to me that I’m now bragging about getting a first pressing of a record. I have become that which I have raged against for so long.
Regardless, this is probably one of the most perfect gifts for the Transformers fan in your life that is impossible to buy for. It’s a limited edition piece of unique Generation One memorabilia the likes of which we may never see again!
On a personal note, when my FIRST PRESSING arrived (still totally not bragging) the sleeve for the record was damaged. The staff of Enjoy The Ride Records was exceedingly cool with helping me get a replacement sleeve when they became available. If Transformers aren’t your thing, they have tons of other great limited edition releases you should check out!
