DVD Tuesday with Scotty G

Inception – One of the most acclaimed pictures of the year arrives on DVD today. Director Christopher Nolan delivers another mind-bending film (see Memento if you have yet to have your mind blown by Nolan) about people who go into other people’s dreams and plant or steal ideas. The film has an all-star cast in Leonardo DiCaprio, Marion Cotillard, Ken Watanabe, Michael Caine, Ellen Page, Tom Hardy and Joseph Gordon-Levitt and the special effects are top notch. The final act is amazing, where the heroes try to do a dream, within a dream, within a dream case. I have to give big points for the sheer originality of the film, both in the script for coming up with the idea and for the way the film was executed on screen. The zero-gravity fight sequence is probably the most memorable thing of the film, but you will have other moments that will stick with you. You might not completely get what you are watching, but you will definitely enjoy the ride. The ending will leave you debating what you just saw, and the film can best be summed up by Michael Scott in The Office when he said “Saw Inception. Or at least I dreamt I did.”

Shrek Forever After – The 4th installment in the popular franchise follows Shrek in Far Far Away. He is not adjusting to his life of being a father very well, and wants to have one day to himself to act like a true ogre again. Enter Rumpelstiltskin, who offers Shrek a day to himself in exchange for a day from Shrek’s youth that he wouldn’t remember. Shrek agrees and has his day of freedom, but when his time is up, he returns to Far Far Away and everything he has known is gone. No one remembers him, and the life he once had is no more. Rumpelstiltskin took away the day Shrek was born (which explains why everything is upside down in his world and no one remembers him) and now Shrek must make friends again with his old friends in order to stop Rumpelstiltskin from destroying Far Far Away.

Restrepo – This film follows two filmmakers chronicling a year in the life of the Second Platoon, B Company, Second Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment (airborne) of the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team who are fighting in Afghanistan, where they are fighting at an outpost named OP Restrepo. The film was named as the Best Documentary at the Cannes Film Festival this year, and received glowing reviews when it was released in the summer.
