DVD Tuesday with Scotty G

Robin Hood – Director Ridley Scott and actor Russell Crowe team up for the fifth time (the previous four being Gladiator, A Good Year, American Gangster and Body of Lies) in a film about the life of Robin Hood.  Crowe stars as Robin Hood and is supported by a very strong cast in Cate Blanchett as Maid Marion, William Hurt, Max von Sydow, Mark Strong, Danny Huston, Mark Addy and Matthew MacFadyen.  The film has a very interesting back story as it first started life as a film called Nottingham which was going to be a revisionist take on the Sheriff of Nottingham, which would make the Sheriff the good guy and Robin Hood the villain.  Also Sienna Miller was once attached to the film as Maid Marion.  Instead we get a version of the Robin Hood legend that most people have not heard or seen before.  I will warn you; this is not a tale about Robin Hood and his band of Merry Men.  It is more about how the legend came to be.  This is definitely worth checking out.

Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue – This is another Direct-to-DVD offering that follows the adventures of Tinker Bell.  The plot revolves around Tinker Bell getting trapped by a human girl.  Tinker Bell and the girl eventually become friends, but when the girl’s father discovers that a fairy has been captured, he wants to put Tinker Bell in a museum to be displayed.  Tinker Bell escapes but her rival fairy gets captured and it’s up to the fairies to rescue her to keep the secret of fairies away from humans.  The voice cast features Michael Sheen, Kristin Chenoweth, Lucy Liu and Raven-Symone.

Ondine – This film stars Colin Farrell and is written and directed by Neil Jordan (who is most famous for writing and directing The Crying Game).  The story follows an Irish fisherman who is dealing with the fact that his daughter is dying.  One day, while fishing, he discovers a woman in his fishing net, who may or may not be a mermaid.  What makes the film interesting is that everything is not what it appears to be, so you don’t know what is real and what is not.  This is the hidden gem of the week, as I’m sure most people have never even heard of this film, but I find Colin Farrell is an actor that always picks interesting films, so it’s worth checking out.
