This documentary is for all of us Boomers who can still kick ass in our twilight years. What happens when a production company wants to film a horror film on a fixed budget? You don’t call the Ghostbusters; you call in the Silver Screamers.

Silver Screamers
This delightful spine-tingling documentary, Silver Screamers, is a 2025 Canadian documentary film, directed by Sean Cisterna. Silver Screamers, which premiered at Fantastic Fest and the 2025 Cinefest Sudbury International Film Festival, was a creative project to adapt the short story “The Rug” into a film.
“The Rug” is about an elderly woman who discovers that the throw rug that she just bought and brought home…has a voracious appetite. It takes money to make a film, but when the funds are low, a smart director will think outside the box, and that is exactly what Sean Cisterna did.
Enlisting the help of a diverse group of elderly men and women, Cisterna and his film crew worked with the seniors to make a good horror film. Sean Cisterna’s goal was to highlight senior voices by engaging them in a creative project. These seniors ranged in age from their late 70s to their early 90s. The seniors, except for a few, were inexperienced in film production, but they worked beside the professionals as prop masters, make-up artists, cameramen, production crew, and special effects.
What made Silver Screamers even more fun to watch was that none of the seniors who had volunteered for the film enjoyed watching horror films; in fact, they were hesitant to operate any of the filming equipment. Cisterna had reached out to several retirement centers and homes until he found eight brave seniors willing to participate in his project.
Conclusion
This documentary film is a joy to watch, especially when you realize that you are watching the making of a horror film. The seniors were not only responsible for finding the props for the horror film but also creating the special effects that would make a people-eating rug appear real.
The part of Silver Screamers that I loved best was listening to the senior men and women tell their stories about their lives and how the film gave them purpose. The professional film crew had also learned a valuable lesson from the seniors they were coaching.

This film really touched me because I am a senior citizen (I honestly don’t know how this happened). I am a 79-year-old great-grandmother, a science fiction writer with five books published and another on its way, I’m a professional blogger, an Ordained Minister, and a well-known Psychic/Medium. If you Google Steampunk Granny…I pop up first. And yet, my own family just considers me the old woman who can help with the grandbabies, or cook the holiday meals, or give loving granny hugs when needed. My knowledge is neither sought nor respected.
Age is a number. The soul never ages. We “Boomers” have a lot of knowledge and experience to share with the younger generation if only you would put down your phones and ask us. We are walking history books…without the AI.
We need more people like Sean Cisterna who will see the potential in the aged. Watch Silver Screamers. It is a gem for all ages.
