It’s been a great week for Scott Pilgrim fans! We have finally been graced with Scott Pilgrim: EX after quite the gruelling wait.
Here’s the logline: Grab your bass and get ready to rock Toronto the Scott Pilgrim way; Scott Pilgrim EX, the latest adventure brawler from Tribute Games is now available. Bring the pain on vegans, demons and robots in a co-op, no-holds barred beat ’em up where the fate of a criminally underrated band and the entire world are at stake. With a brand-new story co-written by Tribute Games and Scott Pilgrim creator Bryan Lee O’Malley, Scott Pilgrim EX is a must-play for franchise fans.
In Scott Pilgrim EX, which is available on consoles, PC, and Steam, you can play as seven characters: Scott Pilgrim himself, Ramona Flowers, Matthew Patel, Roxie Richter, Lucas Lee, Gideon Graves, and Robot 01.
“Toronto, 20XX. When Scott Pilgrim’s bandmates are abducted by shadowy forces, a brand-new brawling adventure begins! Scott Pilgrim EX takes players on a wild ride through the sprawling streets of Toronto, battling 3 new enemy factions across space and time! Engage in creative combat, upgrade your characters, and discover hidden secrets.”
With adorable new 8-bit graphics, all new music by Anamanaguchi, and returns of characters that we haven’t seen in quite some time (cough cough Lisa Miller), this game is a mandatory play for fans of the series. The game shares the same designs as the recent Scott Pilgrim Takes Off anime that was on Netflix and is closer to that Scott Pilgrim iteration than the true graphic novel canon.
Although Scott Pilgrim EX is slightly similar to the original Scott Pilgrim vs The World: The Game, it’s quite a bit more fun in my opinion, and easier. This new game remains a side-scroller with lots of familiar Toronto locations.
One of my favourite details is the number of references to not only the Scott Pilgrim series but also to one of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s other graphic novels, Seconds.
I think Scott Pilgrim EX was well worth the wait, and I can only hope that we might get some DLC in the future. Despite his appearance as an NPC, I’d love to be able to play as Wallace Wells at some point.
Overall, if you’re a diehard Scott Pilgrim fan, you won’t be disappointed to return to his world.
