In the Game: ‘Donkey Kong Bananza: DK Island & Emerald Rush’ is Entertaining but Inessential DLC

Do you have a Nintendo Switch 2 yet? If so, have you picked up Donkey Kong Bananza for it? You may have seen our review, where we said in no uncertain terms that it’s a must-have for the new console.

Now, for everyone who has finished the main game, Nintendo has released Donkey Kong Bananza: DK Island & Emerald Rush, DLC that gives you even more fun to add to the game.

Here’s the logline: Sightsee across this modern take on Donkey Kong’s home, packed with nostalgic views like DK’s Treehouse, Gangplank Galleon, and other iconic locations. Take in-game photos with familiar friends Diddy Kong, Dixie Kong, Cranky Kong, and Rambi, and Squawks, and decorate DK Island with DLC-exclusive character statues that you can obtain with Banandium Chips. You might even find some hidden bonus stages among the mine cart tracks and jungle ruins!

You can get a first look at DK Island* by talking to Squawks after reaching the Racing Layer. After completing the game, you can visit DK Island as its own Layer and decorate it with character statues.

Push your skills to the limit in the fast-paced challenge of Emerald Rush

Take on timed, repeatable, increasingly difficult challenges in Emerald Rush—a mode that plays quite differently from the main game. Start from the ground up and rebuild DK’s power and skills as you progress through challenges in DK Island and various Layers of the Underground World. Collect emerald ore to earn exclusive in-game rewards and perks!

Access this DLC* and start Emerald Rush by talking to one of the Elders and then visiting the Warp Gong after clearing the main storyline.

Donkey Kong Bananza: DK Island & Emerald Rush looks visually great, as you’d expect, but unless you’re into statue collecting or timed runs, it’s not really an essential addition to the original title. It’s also a little pricey at $29.99 Canadian. For my tastes, DLCs are only worth the price of admission when they expand upon the story. That’s a personal opinion, though; there are gamers out there who love new outfits and skills.

Consider the type of gamer you are before you pick this DLC up. If it fits your gaming style, then it’s a clear decision. For anybody else, unless you’re a completist that must have every DLC for every game you own, you can probably pass on Donkey Kong Bananza: DK Island & Emerald Rush and save your money for any of the other big Switch 2 titles that are on the way.
