Figure Friday: E.A. Henson’s Magic Power and a Life Day Miracle

Figure Friday on the biggest shopping day of the year! “Black Friday” the day after American Thanksgiving, how about them Detroit Lions, eh? I honestly don’t know the answer to that question because it’s 8:30 on Thursday morning and I won’t be watching anyways. Shortly, I’ll begin watching the MST3K Turkey Day marathon and sadly watching their latest crowdfunding effort implode in realtime. If they manage to pull off the campaign funding it’ll be more surprising to me than a Lions’ victory.

In my last column I lamented the fact that the MAFEX Hush Batman figure was currently unavailable and I was keeping my fingers crossed for a reissue. Well, within a week a reissue was available for preorder; clearly, I spoke it into existence. I am currently grappling with the scope of my new powers and am unsure what I should wish for next.

Star Wars Holiday Special Chewbacca (Life Day) 1/6 Scale Limited Edition Bust

The Star Wars Holiday Special is a nerd rite of passage that has to be seen to be believed. I was in my 20s when I finally plucked up the courage to buy a bootleg copy from a comic con I was attending because that was the only way to actually see it.

Growing up the Holiday Special was an urban legend of purely mythic proportions. It was something you would read about in trade magazines or heard about from someone’s older brother who still lived at home (he had a friend of a friend that saw it.) At the time, Lucasfilm only begrudgingly acknowledged its existence and the man himself, George Lucas, was famously quoted as wanting to “smash every copy in existence with a hammer.” I firmly believe that Disney will not release an official copy of the Holiday Special until Lucas has departed this mortal plane.

The special is one hour and thirty-seven minutes and you feel every excruciating second of it. If you’re able to get ahold of a copy I’m of the opinion that you should do it “right” and watch it as it is. There’s a Rifftrax version available and that takes a lot of the sting out of the experience   and, to me, feels a bit like cheating. The special is amazingly and hilariously bad and I’m so happy it exists.

Which brings us to this week’s feature a bust of Chewbacca in his Life Day robes. It make more sense if you’ve seen the special…BUT NOT MUCH. Here’s the product description:

As the holidays approach, a Star Wars fan’s thoughts turn to Life Day, the ancient
Wookiee celebration of family, joy and harmony, which spread across the galaxy in the wake of the Galactic Empire’s defeat. Wearing his Life Day robes and holding a crystalline Life Day Orb, Chewbacca is ready to celebrate in this holiday mini-bust. It measures approximately 7″ tall, is limited to only 1000 pieces and comes packaged with a numbered certificate of authenticity in a full-color box.

I can’t even front…I totally want this. I don’t really decorate for the holidays but I would bust (pun!) this bad boy out the day after Halloween every year and place it in a place of prominence until two weeks into the new year. It is perfection and it’s likely the most excited I’ve been about a Star Wars release in years.

You can preorder Chewie in all his finery now with an estimated arrival date of August 2024, just in time for next year’s Life Day.
