Lulu, congrats on the new single “Stay.” Can you tell us what inspired the song?

Lulu Simon: I’ve been sitting on this song for some time, but I just love pop music so much and have always wanted to make a big, dramatic pop song and I think for a while I was trying to figure out what my sound was and where I fit within the pop landscape, but now I don’t think I really need to “fit” anywhere and can just make the music that I love and feel excited about, and this song is definitely that. I think “Stay” really illustrates the delusion and push and pull at the end of a relationship, where you both hate and miss the person who’s hurt you.

Britney Spears and particularly her classic song “Lucky” have had a big influence on you. What was it about that song that struck a chord with you?

LS: I mean, Britney is simply an icon, she’s always been so talented and beautiful but also so good-natured, such a fun sense of humor, so I love her for that, but I can’t explain the “Lucky” allure… I was literally 6 years old when I heard it for the first time and was like, “This is everything”. It was some deeper kind of chemical music math, it just totally captivated me on a subconscious level and it’s truly a perfect pop song.

You’ve described your sound as sensitive-pop. What does that mean to you?

LS: To me, sensitive pop is music that you can dance to while also crying. Musically it’s upbeat and exciting, but lyrically it’s like, oh ok, so we’re crying now.

This November, you’re hitting the road with EMEI. Are you excited to perform “Stay” out on the road? And do you feel that EMEI’s crowd is a Lulu Simon crowd?

LS: I’m definitely excited to perform “Stay,” I think it’s probably my biggest song, sonically, so I’m psyched to feel the drama on stage for sure. I really hope EMEI’s crowd is a Lulu crowd hahaha. I think EMEI is so cool and I just hope her fans think I’m even a fraction as cool as she is.

What’s next for you, Lulu?

LS: I’m putting the finishing touches on some more new music that I’m excited to release into the world, and hopefully I’ll be able to hop on another tour in the spring, I love playing shows and meeting people and TikTok stresses me out so it’s a really great way for me to get in front of people hahaha.
