The Avengers Assemble To Kick Off The Summer Blockbuster Season – Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Predictions, Weekend Of May 4th, 2012

And so it begins – the summer blockbuster season, which kicks off with what just may be the film to beat. Let’s not waste time – we all know The Avengers is going to do big business this weekend, but how much will it actually gross over the next three days. Here are our predictions:

Directed by Joss Whedon. Staring Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlet Johansson , Samuel L. Jackson, Jeremy Renner and Mark Ruffalo. Based on the characters created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Do I really need to say anything more about The Avengers? Ok, maybe a few more things. The Avengers has already grossed $280 million overseas, which demonstrates what amazing (and maybe just a little surprising) demand there is for this film. As for reviews, Rotten Tomatoes currently has it sitting at 93% fresh, which is just astounding for a mainstream, summer blockbuster film.

So how much will it make this weekend? Based on the hype and the reviews, we’re certainly looking at huge numbers. When it comes to comic book films, to have the number one opening weekend ever The Avengers has to score more than The Dark Knight’s $158 million. To be number one overall, it has to beat Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2’s $169 million. I think The Avengers will accomplish one but not the other, as it debuts with $165 million.

As for the rest of the weekend, it really won’t matter, but for the sake of our top five, Think Like A Man will fall to second with $11 million. The Pirates! will be in third with $8 million. The underperforming Five-Year Engagement will pull in $6 million while The Hunger Games will wrap up the top five with $5 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) The Avengers – $165 million
2) Think Like A Man – $11 million
3) The Pirates! – $8 million
4) The Five-Year Engagement – $6 million
5) The Hunger Games – $5 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turned out!
