Monsters University vs World War Z – Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Predictions

This weekend sees two films aiming to send Man of Steel flying from the top of the box office. Which one will come out on top? Here are our predictions:

Monsters_University_poster_3Sure to be a monster in theaters this weekend is Pixar’s Monsters University, the prequel to 2001’s Monsters, Inc. There’s little question that this will be the movie to beat, thanks to the reliable Pixar brand, the legacy of the original film, and the lack of big time family films since the release of Epic. Look for Monsters University to hit number one this weekend with $80 million.

Find out how the rest of the weekend will turn out after the jump!
World_War_Z_posterThere’s been lots of controversy about World War Z, the adaptation of the bestselling Max Brooks book, staring Brad Pitt. A $200 million budget, massive reshoots, and a whole new third act have left critics wondering if Paramount will actually be able to pull a decent film out of the wreckage. There’s a lot of competition out there right now, and I have a feeling that World War Z will wind up the victim of a crowded market and bad buzz. Look for a third place showing with $40 million.

As for the rest of the top five, look for Man of Steel to continue to do well. It should hit second place with $53 million, as it passes the $200 million mark. This Is The End will hit fourth place with $12 million, while Now You See Me will close things out in fifth with $8.5 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) Monster University – $80 million
2) Man of Steel – $53 million
3) World War Z – $40 million
4) This Is The End – $12 million
5) Now You See Me – $8.5 million
