Will Any New Release Take Down “Rogue One”This Holiday Weekend?

Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and everything other joyful celebration you may be having this weekend. If you’re thinking of taking in a movie, there are some new releases hoping to move you into theatres. Will any take down last week’s number one film? Here’s our prediction:

Sing is a new animated film about karaoke as done by animals. I really shouldn’t have to say much more, as this one is pretty much guaranteed to be the family film of choice over the holidays. Throw in the fact that it’s an Illumination film, and its safe to say Sing is set for a strong showing. Look for a second place debut with $51 million.

Passengers is a sci-if love story starring Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence. While the trailers have been exceptionally appealing, rarely reviews have been absolutely disasterous for the film. For any success, especially in the face of another science fiction film in the market, the movie will have to rely on its star power, which should give it a decent debut but no legs. Look for Passengers to arrive in third place with $31 million.

Assassin’s Creed is an adaptation of the mega-popular video game franchise from Ubisoft. The studio has gone all out with this one, bringing in respectable actors Michael Fassbender, Marion Cottilard, Jeremy Irons and Brendan Gleeson to star.  Unfortunately, the reviews for Assassin’s Creed have been uniformly awful, and I anticipate the Christmas audience will likely skip this one altogether. Look for a fourth place debut wih $20 million.

As for the rest of the top five, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story should have an excellent hold as it stays in first place with $98 million. Disney’s Moana will close things out in fifth place with $12 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) Rogue One: A Star Wars Story – $98 million
2) Sing – $51 million
3) Passengers – $31 million
4) Assassin’s Creed – $20 million
5) Moana – $12 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
