31 Days of Horror 2023: Gilbert Speaks on ‘The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon S01 E04’

In the fourth episode of this fabulous TWD spinoff, we pick up where we left off…Daryl falling through the roof after a battle with Codron. While Isabelle searches for Laurent, Daryl runs into the pigeon man.

La Dame de Fer

La Dame de Fer means Lady of Iron, but who is this lady? Could it be the brutal leader, Genet (Ann Charrier)? Or is it Quinn’s girl singer, Anna (Lukerya Illiashenko)? I will say that this week’s episode was definitely packed with action, and we get to see Daryl (Norman Reedus) go full on Kraken with some of Quinn’s (Adam Nagaitis) men.

This episode picks up where Daryl falls through the roof of Montmartre and into a body of water that holds synchronized walker swimmers. Daryl makes sure these walkers will not be making the Olympic games anytime soon. He is desperate to make his way back to Isabelle’s (Clemence Poesy) old apartment. Thankfully, he runs into the pigeon man who gives him directions before being ambushed. Daryl honors Antoine’s last wish. Free the birds. As Daryl makes his way to the apartment, he hears someone playing the cello, and an elderly couple enjoying a chat. Paris is still Paris even with a city full of shuffling bags of meat.

Having the series shot in France was an excellent idea from the start. Daryl is out of his element, but he is learning about the culture (as are the viewers) from the friends that he has made. We forget that the French resistance had successfully crippled the Nazis while they occupied their country. This is the fighting spirit that is making the story so believable. Plus, Paris is the city of love, and I suspect that Isabelle and Daryl have feelings for each other.

Daryl and Isabelle find Laurent (Louis Puech Scigliuzzi) at the Eiffel Tower. The boy is surrounded by Eiffel walkers. While Isabelle and Daryl fight them off, the boy is kidnapped by Quinn’s men. I keep waiting to see what Laurent’s superpowers are, but the powers that be are refusing to even give a hint. Daryl did have some sort of epiphany after falling through the roof. Is Laurent invisible to walkers?

Quinn

Isabelle’s old flame is a jerk. We realized this from episode one. Quinn wants the boy with him, but I doubt there is any fatherly love behind this. He has already made plans with Codron (Romain Levi) and Genet concerning Daryl. Quinn has bargained Daryl for a Monet painting. His singer/girlfriend, Anna is afraid that she will lose her spot to Isabelle. She may be right.

Conclusion and Spoilers

There was a lot of brutality in this episode. Daryl tortures one of the kidnappers to find a way into Quinn’s cabaret. Fallow (Eriq Ebanouey), along with Sylvie (Laika Blanc-Francard) and Emile (Tristan Zanchi) offer a diversion for Daryl to get into the cabaret through a secret entrance. Sylvie has fallen in love with Emile and says out loud what the viewers are thinking… is Isabelle also falling for Daryl?

Daryl somehow rescues Laurent, but spares Quinn’s life, but when he meets the others at the river where the boat to the Nest is waiting, Isabelle tells Daryl that she will stay with Quinn because Genet has set up roadblocks? What? None of this makes sense. Why are Daryl and Laurent safe on the boat and not Isabelle?

As the boat takes Daryl and Laurent to the nest, we get to see a parting view of Paris and the smaller Statue of Liberty… is she the lady of Iron that the title hinted at?
