That sound you hear is crickets. Lots of them.
The early estimates are in and this weekend’s one new release was a huge bomb at the box office, bringing in a paltry $7.8 million to land in sixth place. There’s no silver lining for this film, as it couldn’t even line its pockets with the more expensive IMAX ticket prices. With a budget of $64 million, I think we’re already looking at one of the more high profile failures of the year, and it’s only January.
Holding on to first place was Ride Along, which brought in $21.5 million to up its two week take to a more than impressive $75 million.
As for the rest of the top five, Lone Survivor came in second with $12.8 million, with The Nut Job close behind in third with $12 million. Frozen was in fourth place with $10 million, while Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit closed things out in fifth with $9 million.
So, to recap, here were our predictions:
1) Ride Along – $20 million
2) The Nut Job – $16 million
3) I, Frankenstein – $15 million
4) Lone Survivor – $14 million
5) Frozen – $12 million
