Conjuring a Victory – Biff Bam Pop’s Weekend Box Office Wrap-Up Report

box1I took a shot in the dark my first time out with these Box Office Predictions, and I think I did all right. The numbers are pretty close, but it looks like The Conjuring is number one, while Despicable Me 2 went to, um, number two, while Turbo sped right into third place. Grown Ups 2 is still strong, but R.I.P.D. had some bad luck finding an audience this weekend. We’ll take a look at the real numbers in the Wrap-Up Report, after the jump.

As predicted, The Conjuring was the big winner this weekend pushing Despicable Me 2 into second place. Like I said, nothing beats that extra-scary horror movie when it’s based on a true story. The kids are still flocking to see Gru as a good guy, while Ryan Reynolds’ Flash imitation in the body of a snail turned on the ‘turbos’ for third place.

box3Bruce Willis proves he still has box office pull with Red 2, and amazingly so do Adam Sandler and friends with Grown Ups 2, though I don’t know how. The real surprise is Ryan Reynolds’ other movie out this week, R.I.P.D. I really thought that would do much better.

So, to recap, here were Biff Bam Pop’s predictions:

1) The Conjuring – $34 million
2) Despicable Me 2 – $23 million
3) Red 2 – $19.5 million
4) Turbo – $19 million
5) Grown Ups 2 – $18 million

And here’s how things really turned out:

1) The Conjuring – $40 million
2) Despicable Me 2 – $24.4 million
3) Turbo – $21 million
4) Grown Ups 2 – $19.5 million
5) Red 2 – $18 million

Pacific Rim is still hanging in there in sixth place, followed by R.I.P.D. and The Heat. Rounding out the top ten are World War Z and Monsters University still in there fighting.

box4This coming Friday sees the release of the romantic comedy The To Do List, Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine, and the last of the summer’s highly anticipated superhero movies, The Wolverine. Check back here Friday for next week’s predictions, when Andy Burns, Predictor Supreme, will be back, fresh from the San Diego Comic-Con.
