Ok, come on, you know the rest of the words. Even if you didn’t grow up in the late 1960s’, The Monkees have managed to transcend time and their original label as fakers to be one of the best pop bands to have come out of the era. Sure, they were born from Beatlemania and A Hard Day’s Night, but there’s little doubt that together Mickey Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, Peter Tork and Davey Jones were arguably the first manufactured band that wanted credibility and actually deserved it. Buy any Monkees singles collection and your ears wind up getting treated to brilliant pop tracks like “I’m A Believer”, “Last Train To Clarksville”, “Stepping Stone” and, of course, “Daydream Believer”.
Along with the music, The Monkees produced one of the most enduring tv series of all time. Two seasons of comedy and music that managed to work well together – creating a phenomenon that’s lasted for years. This fall, the entire run of The Monkees was rereleased on DVD by Eagle Rock Entertainment. Both season sets are worthy of a spot in your pop culture collection, with the second season set getting a special mention because it contains The Monkees one-off tv special, 33 1/3 Revolutions Per Monkee.

I adore The Monkees. Their music is feel good music and makes me want to smile. My favorite song is “That Was Then, This Is Now.” The reason why I love it is because it’s simply just a “cute” song. They don’t make affectionate songs like this anymore.

The first one to come to mind is “Last Train to Clarksville”, happy little boppy tune!
The B-side to Daydream Believer had an edgier rock sound thanks to Mickey Dolenz. “(I’m Not Your) Steppin’ Stone” is my pick.
