My daughter is four years old. Four and a half, if you want to get technical about it. Her and I, we share what can only be called an obsession. A deep-seeded obsession.
Now, you could be sitting there thinking, what could a dude pushing forty have in common with a little girl. Is it princesses? Is it Frozen? While I can appreciate both, both those answers would be incorrect.
No, our shared love is Disney Infinity. And I’d wager a guess that there are a lot of parents out there who share the same obsession with their children, regardless of their age. It’s just that sort of game.
If you haven’t heard about it, Disney Infinity is indeed a video game that involves placing game pieces of your favourite Disney characters on a base that then brings them up on your television screen. You can play through various games, download worlds created by other players, or even create your own worlds in the massive Toy Box setting.
The two of us got hooked with the original game, especially after I bought Ana and Elsa game pieces (yes, I do actually enjoy Frozen too). Truthfully though, the game was more my daughter’s than mine. That is, until the second iteration of Disney Infinity was released, 2.0. This version brought in a whole set of Marvel characters and games, from the Avengers from the movies to the Guardians of the Galaxy to Spider-Man and his Ultimate television show compatriots. From the world of Nowhere to Marvel’s New York City streets, Disney Infinity 2.0 is the greatest video game recreation of the Marvel Universe I’ve played through, and I’ve played through more than my fair share.
Today is Valentine’s Day, and I’m spending it with my kiddo. For her (and yeah, for my too), I gave her the Toy Story game set, featuring Annie and Buzz Lightyear. I know we’ll be playing that. I also know when the game shuts downs, we’ll be reading the Disney Infinity Character Encyclopedia from our pals at DK. When DK asked me if there were any books I wanted to take a look at for Valentine’s Day, that was the first and only choice for me. One, it’s up to date and includes all the latest Disney 2.0 figures (the Marvel line isn’t included in this one), including Aladdin, Jasmine, Hiro and Beymax, so it should help with the whole upgrading characters process. But more importantly than that, having the Disney Infinity Character Encyclopedia to read virtually guarantees more quality time with my daughter. A couch, a cuddle, and a read through of our favourite obsession. It really doesn’t get much better than that for me.
