You can’t stop The Avengers, that’s for sure. The film is breaking records all over the place, including this past weekend, which saw it become the first movie in history to gross over $100 million in it’s second weekend.
As for Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows…well…
Read on after the jump.
The sole new release this weekend, Dark Shadows was a victim of both The Avengers onslaught and a horrible marketing campaign that failed to demonstrate what the film actually was (a gothic film with comedic undertones rather than the opposite – read our review here). The film only managed a $28 million opening, which doesn’t bode well for it’s legs going forward. Dark Shadows will undoubtedly be one of this summer’s big financial disappointments, though it should manage to recoup some losses when it hits DVD, likely just in time for Halloween.
As for the rest of the top five, Think Like A Man brought in $6.3 million to land in third, The Hunger Games hit fourth spot with $4.4 million (current North American total – $386 million) while The Lucky One closed things out with $4 million.
So, to recap, here were our predictions:
1) Marvel’s The Avengers – $115 million
2) Dark Shadows – $30 million
3) Think Like A Man – $5 million
4) The Hunger Games – $4.5 million
5) The Pirates! – $3 million
And the weekend estimates:
1) Marvel’s The Avengers – $103 million
2) Dark Shadows – $28 million
3) Think Like A Man – $6.3million
4) The Hunger Games – $4.4 million
5) The Lucky One – $4 million
This Wednesday sees the release of The Dictator and next Friday Battleship docks in theatres. Both will try to sink The Avengers. Check back on Friday to see our predictions!
