Dark Shadows Falters In The Shadow Of The Avengers – Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Wrap-Up Report, Weekend Of May 11th 2012

You can’t stop The Avengers, that’s for sure. The film is breaking records all over the place, including this past weekend, which saw it become the first movie in history to gross over $100 million in it’s second weekend.

The Avengers brought in as astounding $103 million in it’s second weekend out. While not the $115 I thought it might deliver, there’s no questions that this is a spectacular showing. The film’s North American total has risen to $373 million, while it’s overseas numbers are currently at $628 million. Do the math and you’ll see that The Avengers total worldwide gross is now $1 billion, putting it at number eleven in the list of all time box office grosses. The film is now virtually guaranteed to hit $500 million in North America. How long will The Avengers stay on top, especially with the imminent release of Battleship and Men In Black 3 over the coming weeks? That question will be answered soon enough.

The sole new release this weekend, Dark Shadows was a victim of both The Avengers onslaught and a horrible marketing campaign that failed to demonstrate what the film actually was (a gothic film with comedic undertones rather than the opposite – read our review here). The film only managed a $28 million opening, which doesn’t bode well for it’s legs going forward. Dark Shadows will undoubtedly be one of this summer’s big financial disappointments, though it should manage to recoup some losses when it hits DVD, likely just in time for Halloween.

As for the rest of the top five, Think Like A Man brought in $6.3 million to land in third, The Hunger Games hit fourth spot with $4.4 million (current North American total – $386 million) while The Lucky One closed things out with $4 million.

5) The Pirates! – $3 million
