Which New Release Took Down The Hunger Games – The Lucky One or Think Like A Man? Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Wrap-Up Report, Weekend of April 20th, 2012

After four weeks at the top of the box office, The Hunger Games was finally toppled. But which new release managed the feat – the ensemble film Think Like A Man or the Zac Efron/Nicholas Sparks film The Lucky One? Find out after the jump!

The ensemble comedy Think Like A Man made a huge impact at the movies this weekend, hitting the top with a stellar $33 million opening weekend. On Friday I suggested the film was looking to tap into the audience that has also embraced Tyler Perry, and Think Like A Man managed to do that and some. Now the questions is, how large will the drop be from week to week for Think Like A Man and will it manage to top the box office prior to the release of The Avengers.

Opening strong in second place is Zac Efron’s The Lucky One, with $22 million. That’s $10 million more than Efron’s last similiar flick, Charlie St. Cloud , did it’s first weekend out. The studio should enjoy its success this weekend, as I’m anticipating a significant drop next weekend when The Five-Year Engagement is released.

As for the rest of the top five, The Hunger Games slipped to third place in its fifth weekend in release, bringing in $14.5 million for a North American gross so far of $356 million. I doubt the film will reach $400 million, but regardless the film has been an astounding success. The summer blockbusters have a lot to live up to.

Coming in fourth was the Disneynature Earth Day film Chimpanzee, which I hadn’t made a prediction for. The film grossed $10 million, which is the best debut for that arm of Disney. Rounding things out in fifth place was The Three Stooges with $9 million. As for the great yet underperforming geek film The Cabin In The Woods, it could only manage $7.7 million to land in sixth place.

So, to recap, here were our predictions:

1) The Hunger Games – $20.5 million
2) Think Like A Man – $19 million
3) The Lucky One – $17 million
4) The Three Stooges – $11 million
5) The Cabin In The Woods – $9 million

And here’s how the weekend turned out:

1) Think Like A Man – $33 million
2) The Lucky One – $22 million
3) The Hunger Games – $14.5 million
4) Chimpanzee – $10 million
5) The Three Stooges – $9 million
