The Hunger Games Will Swallow The Competition – Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Predictions, Weekend of March 23rd, 2012

Let’s be real – we all know that The Hunger Games is going to rule the box office this weekend. And by rule, I mean utterly decimate the competition. The only real question is, how much money will the film bring in over the weekend? Are we talking Twilight numbers? Summer blockbuster dough? Or will the return be less than expected. Here are our predictions:

Big money. That’s what we’re going to see The Hunger Games bring in. The first in a planned trilogy based on the Suzanne Collins books (and great books, they are), the hype has reached overdrive the last few weeks with stars Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson all over the media. But what should have fans of the books even more excited is the fact that reviews have been strong for the story of Katniss Everdeen and the nation of Panem. Unlike the Twilight Saga, which has suceeded inspite of its absolute flaws, The Hunger Games has strong source material and accolades on its side. On that note, I think we’re going to see a fantastic turnout this weekend. Look for The Hunger Games to top the box office with $130 million, significantly more than the $69 million the first Twilight film made in its opening weekend.

As for the rest of the top five, as mentioned no other film will come close. However, last week’s number one film, 21 Jump Street, has been performing well throughout the week and should bring in a healthy $23 million for second place. Look for Dr. Seuess’ The Lorax to hit number three with $12 million. Disney’s folly, John Carter, will hit fourth spot with $8 million, while Project X will close things out at number five with $4 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) The Hunger Games – $130 million
2) 21 Jump Street – $23 million
3) Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax – $12 million
4) John Carter – $8 million
5) Project X – $ 4 million
