Twi-hards got their fill of Bella and Edward this weekend, even if they didn’t come out in the record numbers I predicted. In the meantime, nobody involved with Happy Feet 2 were doing any dancing, as the film had what could only consider a disappointing opening weekend. Read on to see how the rest of the box office turned out.
Happy Feet 2 debut with a lacklustre $22 million, a far cry from the $50 million I thought it could bring in. This can’t be seen as anything but a disappointment for all involved, and I don’t anticipate the film having any sort of legs. Once again, with The Muppets debuting next week, I think Happy Feet 2 will lose its potential audience.
As for the rest of the top five, Immortals fell from number one to number three with $12.2 million, a massive decrease of 62%. I had predicted a gross of $20 million, so its safe to say word of mouth is doing nothing for the film. Jack and Jill landed in fourth place with $12 million, one spot higher and $1 million more than I had predicted. And finally, Puss In Boots had its most significant decrease to date, coming in at number five with $10 million (I had predicted a fourth place finish with $16.5 million.
So to recap, here were our predictions:
1) The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 – $148 million
2) Happy Feet 2 – $50 million
3) Immortals – $20 million
4) Puss In Boots – $16.5 million
5) Jack and Jill – $11 million
And here is how the weekend turned out:
1) The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 – $139.5 million
2) Happy Feet 2 – $22 million
3) Immortals – $12.2 million
4) Jack and Jill – $12 million
5) Puss In Boots – $10 million
Look for the big battle next weekend to be between Breaking Dawn Part 1 and the much-anticipated The Muppets. Check back on Friday to see our predictions!
