Misison: Impossible Rogue Nation cruises to a second week on top

One of the most well reviewed films of the summer continued to bring in audiences this weekend, while arguablly the worst reviewed film of the season managed tto severely underperform, even with lowered expectations. The early estimates are in, and here’s what went down:

Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation held on to the top spot at the box office for the second weekend in a row, bringing in an estimate $28 million to raise its total to $107 million. It had an audience drop off of just 50%, which is strong for a summer blockbuster action film. While it may not make it past the $200 million mark in North America like prevous instalments in the franchise, it’s worth noting that the last film, Ghost Protocol was released in December 2011, when competition was less fierce. If the film can get to the upper reaches of the $100 millions, it should be considered a significant success. 

Debuting in second place with just $27 million is the much-maligned Fantastic Four reboot. Reviews decimated the film, and audiences walking out were, for the most part, equally offended by what they saw on screen. The film couldn’t satisfy either fanboys and girls, or those simply willing to give the film a chance. Fantastic Four should be one of the biggest bombs of the summer, and in all likelihood will kill the franchise, unless Fox looks to work with Marvel Studios in some capacity.

As for the rest of the top five, The Gift debut in third place with $10 million. Vacation was in fourth place with $8.8 million, while Marvel’s Ant-Man closed things out in fifth with $7.9 million.

1) Fantastic Four – $35 million
2) Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation – $26 million
3) Ricki and the Flash – $10 million
4) Minions – $8.5 million
5) Vacation – $7 million

And here’s how the weekend turned out:

1) Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation – $28 million
2) Fantastic Four – $27 million
3) The Gift – $10 million
4) Vacation – $8.8 million
5) Ant-Man – $7.9 million
