Jurassic World chomps down on Ted

Bear sees dinosaur. Dinosaur sees bear. Bear approaches dinosaur. Dinosaur eats bear. Emotions run wild.

That, my friends, is pretty much what happened at movie theatres this weekend, as a new release took a run at the top spots at the box office and failed miserably. Here’s what went down:

Amidst lousy reviews and audience apathy, Ted 2 debut in third place with an anemic $32.9, significantly down from the $50 + the first film arrived with with back in 2012. While awareness was high, the interest just wasn’t there, and I doubt we’ll see another one in this franchise. Ted 2 may make it past $100 million, but I’m doubtful of even that. 

As for the rest of the top five, Jurassic World had another huge weekend, duking it out with Inside Out for the top spot, ultimately coming out on top with $54 million as it crossed the $500 million mark. Inside Out had to settle again for second place, but it dropped less than 42% week to week, bringing in $52.1 million and raising its total to $184.9 million. Max debut in fourth place with $12.2 million, while Spy closed things out in fifth place with $7.8 million.

So, to recap, here were our predictions:

1) Jurassic World – $60 million
2) Inside Out – $55 million
3) Ted 2 – $49 million
4) Max – $10 million
5) Spy – $7 million

And here’s how the weekend turned out:

1) Jurassic World – $54.2 million
2) Inside Out – $52.1 million
3) Ted 2 – $32.9 million
4) Max – $12.2 million
5) Spy – $7.8 million
