Insidious 2 Breaks Records, The Family Does Ok – Biff Bam Pop’s Weekend Box Office Wrap-Up Report

It was a huge weekend at the box office for one new release, and a surprisingly decent one for another. Here’s what went down.

It’s no surprise that Insidious 2 topped the box office, but it’s the number that makes the feat hugely impressive. The film brought in $42 million to not only score the biggest September opening in history, but also the biggest opening for any horror flick this year. Clearly audiences were keen for a follow-up to the first one, which had some decent legs during its 2011 theatrical run. It will certainly be interesting to see how this sequel fares over the next few weeks.

The new gangster film The Family managed to exceed expectations, debuting in second place with $14.2 million. Some pundits said a film staring Robert DeNiro and Michelle Pfeiffer should have had a stronger opening number, but neither of these actors can typically open a movie strong anymore. The film’s budget is listed at $30 million, so the family will likely break even during its theatrical run, which is certainly better than I thought it would do.

As for the rest of the top five, Riddick fell to third place with $6.7 million, Lee Daniels’ The Butler made $5.3 million to hit fourth place, while We’re The Millers was right behind in fifth with $5.2 million.
