It was a huge weekend at the box office for one new release, and a surprisingly decent one for another. Here’s what went down.
Find out how the rest of the weekend turned out after the jump!
The new gangster film The Family managed to exceed expectations, debuting in second place with $14.2 million. Some pundits said a film staring Robert DeNiro and Michelle Pfeiffer should have had a stronger opening number, but neither of these actors can typically open a movie strong anymore. The film’s budget is listed at $30 million, so the family will likely break even during its theatrical run, which is certainly better than I thought it would do.
As for the rest of the top five, Riddick fell to third place with $6.7 million, Lee Daniels’ The Butler made $5.3 million to hit fourth place, while We’re The Millers was right behind in fifth with $5.2 million.
So, to recap, here were our predictions:
1) Insidious 2 – $35 million
2) Riddick – $8.5 million
3) Lee Daniels’ The Butler – $7 million
4) We’re The Millers – $5.5 million
5) The Family – $5 million
And here’s how the weekend turned out:
1) Insidious 2 – $42 million
2) The Family – $14.2 million
3) Riddick – $6.7 million
4) Lee Daniels’ The Butler – $5.3 million
5) We’re The Millers– $5.2 million
Next weekend sees the release of Prisoners and The Wizard of Oz 3D. Be sure to check back on Friday to see our predictions!
